About Bailei Knight’s Father: Suge Knight

On April 19, 1965, in Compton, California, Marion Knight, Jr., the future Suge Knight was born. The name “Suge” originated from his childhood nickname “Sugar Bear.” He is the child of Marion Knight Sr. and Maxine Knight.

Suge graduated in 1983 from Lynwood High School, where he excelled in football and athletics. He played football for two years at El Camino College before transferring to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he continued to play for another two years in 1985.

For the Los Angeles Rams during the 1987 NFL Players Strike, Knight was a replacement player. With them, he engaged in two games.

Following his experience with the NFL, Knight started promoting concerts and serving as celebrity clients’ bodyguards, including Bobby Brown. Knight established his own music publishing business in 1989, and he quickly became successful when Vanilla Ice decided to give him the rights to the song “Ice Ice Baby” royalties.

However, there was debate surrounding it. Knight and his bodyguards allegedly repeatedly confronted Vanilla Ice to pressure him into giving up the music rights, even breaking into his hotel room and allegedly hanging him by the ankles from the balcony.

The D.O.C. and DJ Quik are examples of hip-hop acts that Knight signed after establishing an artist management company. This is how he met a lot of the N.W.A. gangsta rappers.

Death Row Records

Suge is best known for his role as the co-founder and former CEO of Death Row Records, a label that helped gangster rap gain popularity in the 1990s.

Along with Dr. Dre, The D.O.C., and Michael “Harry-O” Harris, Suge co-founded Death Row. Harry-O was detained at the time following his arrest and conviction for running a sizable drug trafficking operation with the Cali Cartel.

Death Row received $1.5 million in startup funding from Harry-O. David Kenner, a former criminal defense attorney for Harry-O, joined the label as in-house counsel and now manages his investment. In exchange for the investment, Suge reportedly pledged to turn Lydia, Harry-wife, O’s into a pop star.

Dr. Dre, Tupac Shakur, and Snoop Dogg were among the first artists that Suge and Death Row signed. Dr. Dre’s solo album, “The Chronic,” achieved Triple Platinum certification in the United States by the end of 1993. Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre’s apprentice, who put out his debut album in 1994, had his career assured as a result. In the U.S., “Doggystyle” achieved triple platinum status the same year.

Knight and 2 Live Crew engaged in public disputes (“Puff Daddy”). When Knight blasted Combs live on TV at the Source Awards in August 1995, their feud intensified. Later that year, under the condition that the rapper sign with Death Row, Suge Knight offered to post Tupac Shakur’s $1.4 million bail.

All Eyez on Me and The “Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory” are two albums he agreed to release in 1996. In 1995, M.C. Hammer joined Death Row but soon quit the organization.

After Mr. Knight was imprisoned for parole violations, Death Row Records started to break apart. Soon several of Death Row’s most well-known musicians, most notably Dr. Dre, started to quit the company.

Death Row produced an estimated $750 million in net income during its peak, selling over 150 million albums globally.

Financial Issues

Suge was assessed a back tax debt of $6.5 million by the IRS in 2002. Suge declared bankruptcy on a personal level in 2006. He claimed to have assets at the time that were worth between nothing and $50,000. He also stated that he owed more than $100 million in debt, but most of that came from a single $107 million judgment that was given to his business partner’s ex-wife. Death Row was compelled to file for bankruptcy later that year as a result of these debts.

The assets of Death Row were auctioned off in 2009 for $18 million. A business by the name of Wideawake Entertainment Group placed the highest bid. WIDEawake was ultimately purchased by New Solutions Financial Corp. of Canada. In 2012, New Solutions Financial Corp declared bankruptcy.

Entertainment One, popularly known as eOne, acquired the assets of Death Row in 2013. Hasbro, a manufacturer of toys, purchased eOne in 2019. Hasbro transferred the assets of Death Row to the massive private equity firm The Blackstone Group in 2021 when it sold its music division. Snoop Dogg purchased the trademark and intellectual property rights to “Death Row Records” from Blackstone in February 2022 for an undisclosed sum. The incredibly valuable master recordings of the music company were retained by Blackstone.

Legal Issues

Suge has had multiple legal run-ins in the twenty years since Death Row. Between 1997 and 2001, he was sentenced to four years in jail for violating his parole. In 2003, he received another prison sentence for disobeying his parole.

Suge engaged in numerous physical fights between 2008 and 2009. On February 8, 2012, he was detained once more in Las Vegas on marijuana-related allegations. At a Video Music Awards party held by Chris Brown in a nightclub on the West Hollywood Sunset Strip in 2014, Knight was shot. Despite having six gunshot wounds, he managed to walk by himself to a hospital.

Knight and Katt Williams were detained in October 2014 in connection with the theft of a camera from a paparazzi photographer and were later charged with robbery.

For endangering the life of “Straight Outta Compton” director F. Gary Gray, Knight was charged in August 2017. Suge Knight was negatively portrayed by Gray in the film. Knight was unable to attend his multiple court sessions in 2017 due to blood clots and blindness.

His Personal Life

While serving a prison sentence in 1999, Knight wed American R&B singer Michel’le. He had previously sent her to treatment to assist her in getting sober. Six years after she initially sought a divorce, she learned that their union was truly null and void because he was still legally wed to an ex-wife. Bailei, a daughter of the two (b. 2002).

Toi Lin Kelly, Suge’s fiancée, was given a three-year prison term in 2018 for helping Knight connect and communicate with the creators of a Death Row Records tell-all in 2015. Prior to his murder trial, a court had previously prohibited Knight from speaking with anybody save his attorney.
