Burton Leon Reynolds Jr. was born in Lansing, Michigan, on February 11, 1936. His father was an army colonel who eventually held the position of police chief, and his mother was a head nurse who encouraged her son to read. He sustained a career-ending injury after being selected by the Baltimore Colts, switched to acting, and eventually was awarded a scholarship to the Hyde Park Playhouse.

Reynolds’ body was cremated, and his niece Nancy Lee Brown Hess received his ashes. He was thereafter laid to rest at Hollywood Forever Cemetery on February 11, 2021, the day before he would have turned 85. A bronze bust of Reynolds was erected at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in September 2021.
