His Career
James moved to New York City in 1966, when he started the group “Flying Machine” and started doing frequent performances in Greenwich Village. By the end of 1966, Taylor had developed a complete heroin addiction after beginning to use the narcotic. After his band disbanded, James went back to North Carolina, where he received treatment for six months.
Taylor relocated to London after his recovery in 1967, where he met the head of A&R for the Beatles’ newly established record label, “Apple Records.” James obtained a record deal with Apple Records and created his self-titled debut album after impressing Asher with a demo tape.
After finishing the album’s recording, Taylor flew back to the US and checked himself into a Massachusetts mental health facility because he had started using heroin once more. The album “James Taylor” was released in February 1969, but due to James’ sickness, he was unable to promote the record, which hurt its economic success.
Taylor continued to write songs as he recovered, and in October 1969, after agreeing to a new recording contract with Warner Bros. Records, he relocated to California. In February 1970, James released his second album, “Sweet Baby James,” with Asher continuing to serve as his manager.
Taylor’s third album, “Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon,” was released in April 1971 and received excellent reviews. A cover of Carole King’s “You’ve Got a Friend,” the album’s lead track, peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard charts and won the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance. Taylor spent the majority of 1973 having fun rather than working on his fifth studio album, “Walking Man,” until January 1974. The album was a failure, garnering negative reviews and only moving 300,000 copies in the US.
