Her Early Life

On April 5, 1986, Ashley Elizabeth Fliehr was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, to Ric Flair and Elizabeth Harrell, who was then his wife. Her younger brother Reid passed away on March 29, 2013, and she has an elder half-sister named Megan and an older half-brother named David. At Providence High School, Fliehr played volleyball and won two NCHSAA 4 A-State championships while serving as team captain and player of the year in 2004–2005.

Prior to transferring to North Carolina State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in public relations and a certification as a personal trainer in spring 2008, she attended Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, where she played volleyball in the 2005 and 2006 seasons.

In her native Charlotte, North Carolina, Charlotte Flair saw the WWE Women’s Championship match between Lita and Trish Stratus on the Raw show that aired on December 6, 2004, from the audience. A Women’s Championship match would only be the main event of Raw three times, on October 3, 2016, when Flair herself and opponent Sasha Banks did the same thing almost 12 years later.

At the age of 14, Charlotte Flair made her debut in professional wrestling in World Championship Wrestling (WCW) as Ashley Flair as part of her father’s feud with Vince Russo and her half-brother David. Flair had an appearance in a skit on the Monday Nitro broadcast on May 15 in which Russo, David, and Daffney broke into the Flair family house before being confronted by Flair, her mother Beth, and her brother Reid.

On June 11, Flair watched Ric and David’s retirement match at The Great American Bash from ringside. She and her brother Reid attacked Russo after he tried to intervene in favor of David, handcuffing him, which allowed their father to overcome David.

The Flair family was once more present at the Monday Nitro episode that night as David and Russo competed against Ric in a handicap match. Russo’s henchman R&B Security stopped Flair from interfering on her father’s behalf, enabling David and Russo to defeat Ric and partially shave his head.

She joined NXT, the WWE developmental territory, in Tampa, Florida after signing a developmental deal with the company on May 17, 2012, and trained there under Lodi. Among her NXT coaches was Sara Del Rey. On the July 17, 2013, episode of NXT, Fliehr defeated Bayley in her first televised singles bout under the ring name Charlotte. Late in 2013, Charlotte and Bayley formed a tag team, and on the NXT program airing on September 4, the two women triumphed against Aksana and Alicia Fox.

On the NXT episode from October 10, Bayley went to a match with Charlotte against Santana Garrett, which Charlotte won. However, during the match, The BFFs Beautiful, Fierce Females (Sasha Banks and Summer Rae) entered the ring and tried to persuade Bayley to join them, much to Charlotte’s annoyance.

With victories over Natalya in the finals at TakeOver on May 29, 2014, Alexa Bliss in the semifinals, and Emma in the opening round of the eight-woman tournament for the vacant NXT Women’s Championship, Charlotte won the NXT Women’s Championship for the first time in her career and her first championship in the WWE.

Summer Rae returned to NXT on the June 6 program after a four-month absence, distracting Bayley and allowing Charlotte to defeat her. The BFFs then tried to attack Bayley but were repelled by Emma and the returning Paige. On the NXT program airing on June 12, the altercation sparked a six-woman tag team match, which the BFFs lost when Bayley pinned Charlotte.

Charlotte and Sasha Banks defeated Bayley and Becky Lynch in a tag team match on the NXT program on July 3 to exact some revenge on Bayley. Following the match, Charlotte abandoned Banks to be attacked by Bayley, with Banks formally breaking up the BFFs later that evening in a backstage segment.

Stephanie McMahon demanded a “revolution” in the Divas division on July 13, 2015, episode of Raw. She then introduced Charlotte, Becky Lynch, and Sasha Banks as part of the main roster. While Banks sided with Tamina and Naomi to start a rivalry among the three teams, Charlotte and Lynch sided with Paige, who was in a conflict with Team Bella (Alicia Fox and The Bella Twins). The letters of each wrestler’s first name were used to give the trio Charlotte, Lynch, and Paige the moniker Team PCB.

Charlotte made her WWE pay-per-view debut on July 19 at Battleground, where she prevailed against Banks and Brie Bella in a triple threat match. The final match between the three teams took place at SummerSlam, and Charlotte’s team prevailed after Lynch pinned Brie Bella.

Charlotte developed wicked tendencies in November after defeating her friend Becky Lynch by pretending to have a leg injury, which was followed by a distraction from her father. The tension between Charlotte and Lynch grew throughout December, and after Charlotte lost to Lynch on January 4, 2016, episode of Raw, she attacked Lynch and cemented her villainous turn for the first time since 2014 in NXT. With assistance from her father three days later on SmackDown and on January 24 at the Royal Rumble, Charlotte defeated Lynch to successfully defend the Divas Championship against her.

After losing to her in a non-title match in February, Brie Bella was given the opportunity to compete in a title match at Fastlane, where Charlotte was able to successfully defend her title. A few days later, on March 12, Charlotte faced Natalya at Roadblock to defend her title. Also in March, Charlotte assaulted both of the top contenders in a match between Lynch and Banks, which led to a no-contest outcome.

The result was that Charlotte, Banks, and Lynch will face off in a triple threat match for the Divas Championship at WrestleMania 32. The Divas Championship was replaced with a new WWE Women’s Championship at the event, and Charlotte won it for the first time by defeating Banks and Lynch.

Following WrestleMania 32, Charlotte and Natalya started a feud, and on April 11, 2016, episode of Raw, Charlotte won the title match. As a result of the disqualification, a rematch took place at Payback on May 1, where Charlotte triumphed over Natalya after Charles Robinson, the referee, called time on the contest while Charlotte had Natalya in the sharpshooter even though Natalya hadn’t conceded, as a nod to the infamous “shoot screwjob” the Montreal Screwjob. After the match, Charlotte and Ric Flair were subjected to the Sharpshooter by Natalya and Bret Hart, who was in Natalya’s corner.

As part of the Superstar Shake-up, Flair was transferred to the SmackDown brand on April 11, 2017. She earned a championship opportunity the following week on SmackDown Live by defeating SmackDown Women’s Champion Naomi in a non-title match; however, The Welcoming Committee (Natalya, Carmella, and Tamina) attacked both competitors, resulting in a no-contest. Flair became the first female wrestler in WWE history to compete in the main events of Raw, SmackDown, and a WWE pay-per-view thanks to this match.

Flair was chosen by Becky Lynch to replace her in a bout against Raw Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey at Survivor Series in November. Rousey was victorious by disqualification after Flair viciously attacked her with a chair and kendo staff, turning heel in the process. The first-ever women’s Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match featured Flair competing against Lynch and Asuka on December 16 at the TLC pay-per-view. Rousey would later shove both Flair and Lynch over a ladder to give Asuka the victory.

The WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship was won by Asuka and Flair at TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs on December 20. Flair made a surprise comeback as a face and served as Asuka’s tag team partner. Flair’s victory made her the fourth woman to capture the Grand Slam and the fifth woman to win the Triple Crown. On the SmackDown episode airing on December 25, Flair and Asuka successfully defended the belts in a triple threat tag team contest. After that, Flair got into a fight with Lacey Evans and her dad, Ric Flair, who started interfering with her matches. Due to interference from Flair and Evans, Flair and Asuka would lose the tag team belts back to Jax and Baszler at the Royal Rumble.

Flair participated in the Women’s Royal Rumble match that same evening. She started off at number 15 and defeated Peyton Royce before falling victim to Rhea Ripley and the eventual champion Bianca Belair.

Flair was selected to join SmackDown as the Raw Women’s Champion as part of the 2021 Draft. Flair and Lynch swapped championships on the SmackDown program airing on October 22; as a result, Flair became the SmackDown Women’s Champion for a record-breaking sixth time. On November 8, it was revealed that Flair would compete at Survivor Series against Becky Lynch, the Raw Women’s Champion.

Personal Life

In Chapel Hill, North Carolina, on September 5, 2008, Flair was detained for punching a police officer following an altercation between her, her ex-boyfriend, and her father. She was given a term of supervised probation for 45 days and a $200 fine after entering a guilty plea to a lesser crime.

Flair wed Riki Johnson in May 2010 and the couple was together until February 2013. She admitted leaving Johnson after allegedly suffering repeated domestic assaults in Second Nature, a collaborative memoir of her and her father that was published in late 2017.

Johnson sued Charlotte Flair, her father, author Brian Shields, and WWE in October 2018 for allegedly making “defamatory claims” in the book. Flair was wed to English wrestler Thomas Latimer, best known by his ring name Bram, from 2013 to October 2015. In February 2019, she started dating Mexican wrestler Manuel Andrade Oropeza, also known as Andrade. The couple became engaged on January 1, 2020, and they were wed in Mexico on May 27, 2022.

Charlotte Flair has numerous tattoos, including two hearts above her waistline, her first husband Riki’s name below her waistline, a heart on her left wrist, a Bible verse reading “guard your heart above all else, for it will determine the course of your life” (Proverbs 4:23), a cross on the right side of her torso, and a quote from the Guns N’ Roses song “Patience” written on her right forearm. The latter two are memorials to Reid, her late brother.
