The youngest of the four children of waitress Betty Sue Palmer and civil engineer John Christopher Depp, John Christopher Depp II was born in Owensboro, Kentucky. Throughout Depp’s childhood, his family relocated frequently before finally settling in Miramar, Florida, in 1970. When Johnny was 15 years old, his parents separated. His mother eventually wed Robert Palmer, whom Depp has referred to as “an inspiration.”

When Depp was 12 years old, his mother handed him a guitar, and he started playing in numerous bands. He left Miramar High School in 1979 at the age of 16 to pursue a career as a rock musician. Two weeks later, he made an attempt to return to school, but the headmaster advised him to pursue his aspiration of becoming a musician.

Depp joined the band The Kids in 1980 and started playing with it. After enjoying some local success in Florida, the group changed its name to Six Gun Method and relocated to Los Angeles in search of a record deal. Depp worked a number of odd jobs in addition to the band, including telemarketing. Depp wed makeup artist Lori Anne Allison in December 1983; she was his band’s singer and bassist’s sister.

In 1984, The Kids broke up before agreeing to a record deal, and Depp started working with the group Rock City Angels. Their song “Mary,” which can be found on their debut Geffen Records album Young Man’s Blues, was co-written by him. In 1985, Depp and Allison were divorced.

Depp has some French, German, and Irish ancestry but is large of English descent. His last name is derived from Pierre Dieppe, a French Huguenot immigrant who landed in Virginia circa 1700. Depp asserted having Native American ancestry in interviews given in 2002 and 2011 by saying:  “I guess I have some Native American somewhere down the line. My great-grandmother was quite a bit Native American. She grew up Cherokee or maybe Creek Indian. Makes sense in terms of coming from Kentucky, which is rife with Cherokee and Creek Indian”. When Indian Country Today reported that Depp had never sought information regarding his ancestry or been acknowledged as a Cherokee Nation member, Depp’s claims came under examination.

Given that Depp has no proven Native origin and that Native community leaders view him as “a non-Indian” and a pretender, this drew condemnation from the Native American community. Depp’s decision to play the Native American Tonto in The Lone Ranger and his decision to call his rock group “Tonto’s Giant Nuts” drew criticism.

Depp was formally adopted as an honorary son by LaDonna Harris, a Comanche Nation member, during the marketing for The Lone Ranger, making him an honorary member of her family but not a member of any tribe. At the adoption, Depp was given the Comanche name “Mah Woo May,” which means shape-shifter.

After this, the Native community’s response to his assertions became more critical, including comedic representations of Depp by Native comedians. Following accusations of racism and cultural appropriation, a Dior advertisement for the perfume “Sauvage” starring Depp and Native American images was taken down in 2019.

A Nightmare on Elm Street,” a 1984 horror movie, gave Depp his debut acting role. Before scoring his breakthrough role in the Fox television series “21 Jump Street,” where he was reputedly paid as much as $45,000 per episode, he worked on a few other projects.

Depp was able to get known in the business thanks to “21 Jump Street.” He portrayed the lead role in Tim Burton’s “Edward Scissorhands” in 1990. The part, which was a critical and financial success, launched his lengthy connection with Burton while also establishing him as a major Hollywood actor. Benny and Joon (1993), What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), Don Juan DeMarco (1995), Donnie Brasco (1997), Sleepy Hollow (1999), and Chocolat are a few of the 1990s productions that Depp worked on (2000).

His portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow in the Walt Disney Pictures movie “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” brought him significant praise (2003). In each of the four follow-ups to the franchise, he played the pirate again. In 2004, he collaborated once more with Tim Burton, appearing as Willy Wonka in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and lending his voice to Victor Van Dort in the animated movie “Corpse Bride” (2005).

Depp received the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for his performance in “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” (2007), which was again directed by Burton. He was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for the third time.

He resumed working with Burton on “Dark Shadows” (2010) and “Alice in Wonderland” (2012). Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016), Murder on the Orient Express (2017), and Richard Says Goodbye are some of the other movies he has acted in.

City of Lies, originally slated for 2018, was eventually released in cinemas and on streaming sites in March 2021. The same month, a four-month-old online petition to bring Depp back to the Pirates series met its target of 500,000 signatures. Kevin McNally, another cast member from Pirates, endorsed Depp’s decision to take on the part once more.

Minamata (2020) director Andrew Levitas accused MGM of attempting to kill the movie in July 2021, while Johnny Depp said the Hollywood establishment was boycotting him and referred to his altered reputation as an “absurdity of media mathematics.” August 2021 saw the release of Minamata in the UK and Ireland, while December 2021 saw its release in North America.

At a number of European film festivals, Depp won various honorary prizes, including the Donostia Award at the San Sebastián International Film Festival in Spain and prizes at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic. Numerous domestic violence charities criticized the festivals, which made these prizes contentious.

The San Sebastian Film Festival stated that Depp “has not been charged by any authority in any jurisdiction, nor convicted of any form of violence against women” in a statement made by the ceremonies’ organizers in support of their choice to honor him.

Depp identified himself as a victim of the cancel culture in September 2021. The same month, he announced that IN.2 and the Spanish production business A Contracorriente Films will launch a new development fund for TV and film projects. IN.2 is a sister company to Infinitum Nihil with offices in London.

In recognition of his “outstanding merits in public and cultural activities, especially in the field of film art and the promotion of the Republic of Serbia in the world”.  Depp was awarded the Serbian Gold Medal of Merit by President Aleksandar Vui on February 15, 2022. Filming for Minamata and the cartoon Puffins took place here.

In the historical drama Jeanne Du Barry, starring French actor-director Mawenn, Depp has been cast as King Louis XV as of May 2022. Production is set to start in the summer. The film formerly known as Jeanne du Barry has been renamed La Favorite and will chronicle the tale of Madame du Barry, a poor seamstress who works her way up through Louis XV’s court to become the king’s official mistress. The French historical drama will be co-financed and streamed by Netflix. For Johnny Depp, this will be his first movie in which he speaks French.

Three of the tracks on the CD are originals that Depp co-wrote. In June 2019, their “Rise” second studio album was made available.

In 1983, Depp wed Lori Allison; they later divorced in 1985. He then got engaged to Sherilyn Fenn and Jennifer Grey, both actors, in the 1980s. He proposed to Winona Ryder, his co-star in “Edward Scissorhands,” in 1990. He started dating French actress and singer Vanessa Paradis in 1998 after dating model Kate Moss from 1994 to 1998. They first connected while Depp was filming “The Ninth Gate” in France, and now they are parents to two kids.

After splitting up with Paradis in 2012, Depp started dating actress Amber Heard, whom he had first met during the filming of “The Rum Diary” the year before (2011). After being married in February 2015, Heard requested a divorce in May 2016. She claimed Depp had been “verbally and physically abusive,” but Depp’s attorneys refuted her claims. They divorced amicably in January 2017, with Depp awarding Heard a $7 million settlement.

Defamation Lawsuit

After their divorce was finalized, Depp paid Amber Heard a settlement of $7 million. Amber then promised to give the money to a good cause, specifically the ACLU and the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles.

Johnny alleged that Amber had lied about giving the money to charity in January 2021. In order to learn how much money Heard had truly given to the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles and the ACLU, Depp’s attorneys reportedly contacted them.

The Children’s Hospital was said to have only received $100,000, which would be around $3.4 million short of her supposedly promised payment, according to the Daily Mail. The ACLU reportedly declined to provide the data. According to reports, the hospital even contacted Heard to inquire “whether the vow will not be honored”.

Johnny Depp sued News Group Newspapers, the owners of The Sun, in the UK in 2018 after the publication referred to him as a “wife beater” in an article from April 2018. The trial for the lawsuit was held in 2020. Heard and Depp both gave testimony for several days.

A judge determined in November 2020 that 12 of the 14 violent episodes Heard allegedly claimed to have experienced were “basically true.” In March 2021, Depp’s appeal was rejected.

Johnny filed a defamation lawsuit against Amber Heard in Virginia in 2019. In response to an opinion piece Amber Heard wrote for The Washington Post in December 2018 detailing the alleged abuse she endured, he demanded a $50 million payment.

Despite prior, joint declarations from the pair declaring that “there was never any intent of physical or emotional harm” from either partner, Heard believed that she was strongly hinting that Depp was responsible for multiple incidents of violence, even though she never specifically identified Depp by name.

Depp further asserted that Heard’s actions which he claimed included hitting, kicking, throwing things, and even defecation—made him the genuine victim of domestic abuse. Heard’s requests to have the case dismissed were denied, and Depp’s legal team presented evidence in support of his claims.

In August 2020, Heard filed a countersuit. On April 11, 2022, the defamation case’s trial got underway in Fairfax County, Virginia.

A Virginia jury awarded Johnny $15 million in slander damages on June 1, 2022. Due to Virginia’s cap on punitive damages, that amount was soon lowered to $10.35 million. The jury also decided to pay Amber $2 million in damages. This damage award is appealable.
