Who is Wayne Newton?

wayne newton

On April 3, 1942, in Norfolk, Virginia, Wayne Newton was born to auto mechanic Patrick Newton and Evelyn Marie Smith. He began playing the piano, guitar, and steel guitar when he was six years old. He also started working in the entertainment industry while his father was a member of the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Wayne Newton and his older brother began giving performances when the family moved to Newark, Ohio, in theaters, clubs, and festivals. The family moved to Phoenix in 1952 because Newton had severe asthma. Just before his junior year ended, he left North High School. The Rascals in Rhythm, as the brothers are commonly known, have performed on “Ozark Jubilee” and Grand Ole Opry roadshows, among other television series.

They then performed for President Dwight D. Eisenhower after that. A Las Vegas booking agent saw him while he performed on the “Lew King Rangers Show” in the spring of 1958. The brothers delivered six presentations every day for five years.

Entertainment Career

The start of Newton’s lifetime career came in 1962 when he made his big-screen acting debut on the Jackie Gleason Show. He was also chosen for the legendary western television series Bonanza. By the time “Danke Schoen,” Newton’s debut album, was released in 1963, he had a recording deal with Capitol Records.

It was an immediate hit and reached its Billboard charts peaking at No. 13. It even appeared on the “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” album from 1986, and it became recognized as his signature song.

Well-known entertainers from the time, including Lucille Ball, Bobby Darin, and Jack Benny, provided Newton their support when they initially got started. Newton was given the chance to perform at the Flamingo Hotel as the headliner after Benny recruited Newton to serve as the opening act for his show. His version of “Daddy, Don’t You Walk So Far” sold more than a million copies in 1972.

Later, Newton took the place of the Beach Boys and The Grass Roots in the 1983 Fourth of July celebration on the Washington Mall. James G. Watt, President Reagan’s Secretary of the Interior, forbade rock concerts because they encouraged drug and alcohol use and attracted the “bad element.”

Newton, a friend, and Republican Party donor, donated money as well. He was welcomed at the Independence Day stage on the Mall on July 4, 1983, to mostly cheers and a few jeers.

With “The Letter,” Newton topped the Cashbox Pop and Country charts in December 1992. But for the first time, a song that peaked at number one on the Cashbox list did not reach the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Newton performed alone on a Las Vegas circuit. In 1994, he gave his historic 25,000th solo performance in Las Vegas.

In 1999, Newton agreed to a ten-year contract with the Stardust Resort and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip that required him to perform there six nights a week for 40 weeks out of the year in a showroom that was given his name.

The deal was arranged by his business manager Jack Wishna, and the “headliner-in-residence” was the first of its kind. The arrangement was peacefully terminated after the casino was destroyed in 2005. Later, he began a summer run of 30 shows at the Hilton.

In January 2005, Newton introduced “The Entertainer,” a reality competition show, on the E! Entertainment network. A spot in his act and a year’s worth of lead work were awarded to the winner. Newton competed in the autumn 2007 season of “Dancing With the Stars.” His partner was two-time champion, Cheryl Burke. They were the third squad to fail to win the match.

In the same year that Drew Carey took over as host, Newton made his debut as a guest star on the program. Inherently, Newton showed up once a trip to Las Vegas was mentioned.

In 2008, Newton received a Woodrow Wilson Award for Public Service, which honors public servants who generously assist their communities.

In October 2009, Newton began performing his show “Once Before I Go” at the Tropicana hotel and casino in Las Vegas. He took a five-year vacation after that to spend time with his family and prepare his voice for a prospective residency in Las Vegas.

With a lounge performance titled “Up Close & Personal” at the Bally’s Hotel in 2016, Newton made a remarkable return to the stage. During the event, he sang and performed some of the 13 instruments he had taught himself.

Over the years, Newton, also known as The Midnight Idol, Mr. Las Vegas, and Mr. Entertainment, has made a name for himself as one of the most well-known entertainers in Las Vegas, Nevada. To date, he has given more than 30,000 live performances in Las Vegas, which calls itself “The Entertainment Capital of the World.”
