When Tommy Lee was four years old, he got his first set of drumsticks, and when he was a teenager, he got his first real drum kit. In order to pursue a career in music, he dropped out of high school, beginning with the L.A. club band Suite 19. He listened to Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Cheap Trick, Kiss, AC/DC, and Sweet when he was a teenager. John Bonham, Tommy Aldridge, Alex Van Halen, and Terry Bozzio are his principal drumming influences.

Along with other emerging artists like Van Halen and Quiet Riot, Suite 19 from Lee’s band was a fixture on the Sunset Strip club scene in Los Angeles in the late 1970s. He got to know the bassist Nikki Sixx, whose groups, Sister and later London, shared the same touring scene. Sixx became a fan of Lee’s drumming as he was creating a theatrical band that greatly referenced Sister’s blending of occult imagery with a theatrical heavy metal performance. Due to his 6′ 212′′ height and his slim build, Lee discarded his last name during this time and adopted the moniker “T-bone“.

In 1981, when London ultimately disbanded, Lee and Sixx made the decision to start a new band. Mick Mars, a guitarist, soon joined the group. Lee suggested singer Vince Neil to the other members of the band in order to find a charismatic frontman; Neil quickly joined the group, and Mötley Crüe was created.

The Red, White & Crüe Tour 2005: Better Live Than Dead, the band’s first tour in six years, was launched in support of the double-disc anthology album Lee rejoined with the original Mötley Crüe lineup to release in 2004. The album went quadruple-platinum. On the Top Concert Money Earners list, Mötley Crüe came in at #8 for the entire year. According to Billboard Boxscore, it played 81 gigs and made US$33 million.
