His Early Life

Canelo Alvarez Fernanda Gomez

Canelo Alvarez revealed in an interview that he was born on the outskirts of Guadalajara, Jalisco, but that his family is from Los Reyes, Michoacán. His family relocated to Juanacatlán, Jalisco when he was five years old. He began to ride horses as a child on his family’s farm, and he still does now.

Alvarez is the youngest of eight children, seven of whom are males; all of his brothers are professional boxers as well. Welterweight boxers Ramón lvarez, Ricardo lvarez, and former WBA interim world champion Rigoberto lvarez are among his brothers.

Canelo is the masculine form of cinnamon, a typical nickname for those with red hair in Spanish. Ana Maria, his mother, has red hair as well. Red hair is often associated with Irish troops who fought for Mexico in the Saint Patrick’s Battalion during the Mexican American War in Mexico.

“There might have been an Irish grandfather somewhere back in my past,” Alvarez once claimed of his ancestry. He was harassed as a child, and his nickname was “Jicama con Chile,” which translates to “jicama with chili flakes,” a popular Mexican delicacy.

Canelo’s Career

Canelo Alvarez Fernanda Gomez

After watching his older brother Rigoberto make his professional boxing debut, Alvarez began boxing when he was around 13 years old. He placed second in the Junior Mexican National Championships in Sinaloa in 2004. At the age of 15, he won the 2005 Junior Mexican National Boxing Championship in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas. He has a 44–2 amateur record with 12 knockouts.

Alvarez turned professional at the age of 15 after his father-and-son trainers, Chepo and Eddy Reynoso were unable to locate acceptable junior opponents for him. He knocked out eleven of his 13 known opponents in his first 19 months as a professional, all of whom were much older.

In 2013, the elder Reynoso claimed that Alvarez had fought ten more times during that time, winning all ten by knockout (KO), but that the fights (all in minor venues in the Mexican state of Nayarit) were so badly documented that it was not worth the bother to alter the record.

This translates to a 67–2–2 record with 49 knockouts. His weight fluctuated throughout his three years as a professional, including two documented fights at 140 pounds before settling in the welterweight division at 147 pounds.

On January 20, 2006, in his hometown of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Alvarez defeated future IBF lightweight champion, Miguel Vázquez, in his third official fight. In a rematch on June 28, 2008, Alvarez defeated Vázquez one more. On that same fight card, he and all six of his brothers, Canelo being the youngest, established world history by fighting on the same night.

The main drawback was that three of them did not win in their professional debuts. The four more experienced brothers were victorious. In Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, on March 6, 2010, he knocked out Brian Camechis in the third round. On the undercard of Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Shane Mosley, Alvarez defeated José Cotto to retain his WBC-NABF welterweight title.

In 2020, Alvarez revealed his plan to retire from boxing at the age of 37 and “dedicate himself to his business and playing golf every day” in retirement.

He is also a Mexican boxing promoter. His company, Canelo Promotions, was founded in 2010, and his business partners include his trainers, Chepo and Eddy Reynoso, a father-son duo. Canelo Promotions represented 40 boxers in Mexico as of 2013.
