The second of Vasiliy Petrovich “Basil” Mironov and Kathleen Rogers’ three children, award-winning actress Helen Mirren was born Illiana Lydia Petrovna Mironova on July 26, 1945, in Chiswick, London, England.

With the London Philharmonic, Mirren’s father was a violist. Later, he quit playing in the symphony to work as a taxi driver and driving test examiner, both of which provided more financial security for his family. He eventually found employment with the Ministry of Transport as a civil servant.

The butcher who provided meat to Queen Victoria was the father of Mirren’s mother. Her father, a member of the Russian aristocracy, legally changed the family surname to Mirren when the future actress was nine years old.

Mirren developed an early interest in theater, finding inspiration in an amateur performance of Hamlet when she was just 13 years old. She admitted to being “blown away” by the excessive drama in an interview with The Times UK. “We grew up without TV and never went to the cinema, so after Hamlet, all I wanted to do was get back into that world where all those fabulous things were possible.”

Her parents advised her against pursuing the profession and instead enrolled her in Southend-on-St. Sea’s Bernard’s High School, a Catholic convent. Helen Mirren, who had successfully applied to the National Youth Theatre at the age of 20, was cast as Cleopatra in “Antony and Cleopatra” a few years later. Following her recruitment by the Royal Shakespeare Company, she went on to play a number of sexually explicit roles, such as Castiza in “The Revenger’s Tragedy” (1966), Cressida in “Troilus and Cressida” (1968), and Lady Macbeth in “Macbeth” (1974).
