Early Life

Canfield was born on August 19, 1994 in Fort Worth, Texas. As a teenager, he spent his years in Wheeling, West Virginia. He later graduated in 1962 from the Linsly Military Institute. 

Canfield attended Harvard college where he got a Bachelor’s degree in Chinese history. He furthered his education and obtained his M. Ed. in 1973. In 1981, he received an honorary Ph.D. from the University of Santa Monica.

Career 

After graduating with his B. A, Canfield started teaching in a school in Chicago. Canfield co-authored the book ‘100 ways to enhance self-concept in the classroom’ in 1976. He also worked at the Clinton Job Corps Center in Iowa.

He managed a residential Gestalt center known as the New England Center for Personal and Organizational Development. Here, he received praise as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Men of America (TOYA) in 1978. Canfield also worked at the Jessie V. Stone Foundation in Chicago. In 1976, Canfield co-authored the book, “100 Ways to Enhance Self-Concept in the Classroom.”

Canfield is the CEO and director of The Canfield Training Group located in Santa Barbara, California. He also founded The Foundation for Self-Esteem in Culver City, California. Canfield plays the host of a radio program and writer of a global newspaper column.

To top it all, he is a founding member of The Transformational Leadership Council. He is additionally a psychotherapist, a teacher and he facilitates workshops as well. Canfield is not only involved in several activities, he excels in each one.

In 1993, Canfield released his best-selling book ‘Chicken Soup for the Soul’ which Mark Victor Hansenin co-authored. In 1971, Canfield married Judith Ohibaum, who gave him two sons named Oran and Kyle. He later divorced her in 1976 and moved in with a masseuse. In 1978, Canfield married again and had another son with Georgia Lee Noble. They divorced in 1999.

He later settled with Inga Marie Mahoney, who remains his present wife, to this day. Marie Mahoney is the mother of Travis and Riley, who are now Canfield’s stepchildren. His son, Oran, takes after his father in his gift. He has written some memoirs after his parents’ divorce including “Freefall: The Strange True Life Growing Up” and “Long Past Stopping: a Memoir.”

Canfield continues to inspire the masses with his inspirational stories. He has authored over 15 powerful books and is still working on other projects.
