In his junior season, he led West Forsyth to the state playoffs with an average of 25 points, 5.3 assists, and 4.4 steals per game. He guided Winston-Salem-based Kappa Magic to the National U-17 AAU championship the following summer, winning tournament MVP honors in the process.

Paul gained national prominence during his senior season for scoring 61 points in a game; his grandfather, who was 61 years old at the time, had been killed earlier that year, and Paul had done so by scoring one point for every year of his life.

Paul led West Forsyth to a 27-3 record and the Class 4A Eastern Regional finals with averages of 30.8 points, 5.9 rebounds, 9.5 assists, and 9.5 steals per game during the season. The New Orleans Hornets selected Chris Paul as the fourth overall choice in the first round of the 2005 NBA Draft. For Paul’s first two seasons with the organization, the Hornets spent the majority of their games in Oklahoma City due to the destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina.
