The 49th and current vice president of the United States is Kamala Devi Harris (born October 20, 1964), an American politician and attorney. She is not just the first female vice president but also the first African American and Asian American vice president, making her the highest-ranking female official in American history. She is a Democrat who formerly held the positions of California’s attorney general from 2011 to 2017 and senator from California’s state from 2017 to 2021.

Early Life
Kamala Devi Harris was born in Oakland, California, on October 20, 1964. Shyamala Gopalan was a Tamil Indian scientist who moved to the United States from India in 1958. She was a Ph.D. student in nutrition and endocrinology at the University of California, Berkeley at the age of 19. She was the first to conduct research on the progesterone receptor gene.
In 1964, Gopalan received her Ph.D. Donald J. Harris was born in British Jamaica and moved to the US in 1961 to pursue doctoral studies at UC Berkeley. He is currently a retired professor of economics at Stanford University. In 1966, he received his Ph.D. in economics. During the civil rights movement, Donald Harris, an Afro-Jamaican, met Shyamala Gopalan, the woman who would become his wife.
After her parents obtained jobs at the University of Illinois in 1966, Harris moved to Champaign, Illinois (where her younger sister Maya was born). In short succession, both parents held positions at several institutions while the family moved around the Midwest.

Kamala Harris enrolled at Howard University, a historically black college in Washington, D.C., in 1982 after graduating from high school. She worked as a mail room clerk for California senator Alan Cranston during her internship at Howard, served as chair of the economics society, was in charge of the debate team, and joined the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. Harris earned a political science and economics degree from Howard in 1986.
Kamala Harris subsequently went back to California to enroll in the Legal Education Opportunity Program at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law (LEOP). Career
She served as a deputy district attorney in Alameda County, California, from 1990 to 1998, prosecuting robbery, homicide, and child rape cases. Harris was approached in 2000 for the position of head of the Community and Neighborhood Division by Louise Renne, San Francisco’s elected city attorney.

Personal Life
Harris and attorney Doug Emhoff went on a blind date in 2013, thanks to a mutual acquaintance who introduced them. Emhoff, a legal representative for the entertainment industry, was appointed partner-in-charge of Venable LLP’s Los Angeles office. On August 22, 2014, Harris and Emhoff exchanged vows in Santa Barbara, California.
