Kamala Devi Harris was born in Oakland, California, on October 20, 1964. Shyamala Gopalan was a Tamil Indian scientist who moved to the United States from India in 1958. She was a Ph.D. student in nutrition and endocrinology at the University of California, Berkeley at the age of 19. She was the first to conduct research on the progesterone receptor gene.

In 1964, Gopalan received her Ph.D. Donald J. Harris was born in British Jamaica and moved to the US in 1961 to pursue doctoral studies at UC Berkeley. He is currently a retired professor of economics at Stanford University. In 1966, he received his Ph.D. in economics. During the civil rights movement, Donald Harris, an Afro-Jamaican, met Shyamala Gopalan, the woman who would become his wife.

After her parents obtained jobs at the University of Illinois in 1966, Harris moved to Champaign, Illinois (where her younger sister Maya was born). In short succession, both parents held positions at several institutions while the family moved around the Midwest.

Additionally frequently visiting an African American cultural center were the Harris girls and their mother. A neighbor often drove the Harris daughters and their mother to an Oakland African American church where they participated in the children’s chorus. Their mother taught them about Hinduism and brought them to a local Hindu temple where she occasionally sang.

She claims that her maternal grandpa P. V. Gopalan, a retired Indian civil servant whose progressive views on democracy and women’s rights impacted her, had a significant influence on her. Throughout her adult life, Harris has maintained contact with her Indian aunts and uncles. Harris has also traveled to Jamaica to see her father’s relatives.

When she was seven, her parents got divorced. According to Kamala Harris, other neighborhood kids refused to let her and her sister play with them because they were black whenever they went to see their father in Palo Alto on the weekends. When Harris was twelve, her mother relocated to Montreal, Quebec, where Shyamala had taken a job as a research and teaching assistant at the Jewish General Hospital, which is linked with McGill University.
