Early Life

Katherine von Drachenberg was born in the Mexican city of Montemorelos, to a family of German immigrants. Her parents were René and Sylvia, who were both German Argentine missionaries for the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Von D has two siblings: a brother named Michael, and a sister named Karoline. She was four years old when her family moved to the Inland Empire, and she grew up in Colton, California. 

Kat Von D credits her grandmother, Clara Von Drachenberg, as an inspiration in music and art. She also says that the culture of San Bernardino County has a significant impact on her tattoo work and style.

When she was 12 years old, she began listening to punk rock bands such as the Ramones, the Misfits. Having gotten her first tattoo when she was 14 years old, she dropped out of school at 16 to pursue her dream of becoming a tattoo artist.

When Von D made her debut in Miami Ink in 2005, she had already been working as a tattoo artist. Von D first appeared as a replacement for a former team member. Later, she returned to the show as a full-time cast member, and she remained on for three seasons. 

Ami James, the co-owner, and Kat Von D had a falling out and Kat Von D left the tattoo business. Following her departure from Miami Ink, Von D had the opportunity to star in her own reality television show, LA Ink. It was her attempts to start her tattoo parlor in Hollywood that served as the focal point of the episode. 

LA Ink became extremely popular, and while filming was underway, Kat Von D set a new world record by tattooing 400 individuals in less than 24 hours. Von D ultimately decided not to continue the show and canceled it in 2011 after the fourth season aired.

Von D tied the knot with fellow tattoo artist Oliver Peck in 2003. In August 2007, they decided to call it quits and officially divorced later that year. Von D was reportedly in a relationship with Alex “Orbi” Orbison from 2007 until early 2008. 

She was also in a relationship with Nikki Sixx from February 2008 to January 2010.

The actress tweeted on August 19, 2010, that she and Jesse James, the CEO of West Coast Choppers were dating. Von D and James confirmed their engagement in January 2011 on their official website. However, In July 2011, Von D confirmed they had ended their relationship.

She started a relationship with Canadian music producer Deadmau5, in September 2012. Von D inked him with a star tattoo below his left eye to match her own. Unfortunately, they decided to call it quits in November 2012.
