Jennings was born in Edmonds, Washington, on May 23, 1974. He goes by Kenneth Wayne Jennings III in full. Due to his father’s employment as a foreign lawyer, a sizable chunk of Jennings’ boyhood was spent living overseas with the family. He resided in Singapore and South Korea for 15 years.

Upon his return to the country, Jennings enrolled at the University of Washington. He served as a volunteer missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Madrid, Spain, for two years prior to earning his degree. When he got back, he transferred to Brigham Young University and joined the quizbowl team there. 2000 saw his graduation.

Jennings applied to be a contestant on “Jeopardy!” while employed as a software engineer at a healthcare staffing agency in Holladay, Utah. On the episode that aired on June 2, 2004, he was cast in the show’s 20th season.

After winning this episode, he went on the longest winning streak in the show’s history, winning 75 straight games before being ultimately defeated on November 30, 2004, by challenger Nancy Zerg. $2,522,700 was the entire amount he had won.
