His Early Life

On January 30, 1984, in Cleveland, Ohio, Scott Ramon Seguro Mescudi was born. He is the youngest of Elise and Lindberg Mescudi’s four children. His father died of cancer when Cudi was just 11 years old and his departure had a lasting impact on Cudi’s personality and, subsequently, his music.

He attended Shaker Heights High School for two years before transferring to Solon High School. He threatened to hit his principal, got kicked out of school, and eventually received his GED. Cudi majored in film at the University of Toledo before quitting after a year to enlist in the US Navy, but he was turned down because of his prior arrests as a minor.

Cudi started rapping in high school, then relocated to Brooklyn and lived with his uncle to pursue his career as a rapper. His debut full-length album, a mix tape titled “A Kid Named Cudi,” which he published in 2008, drew Kanye West’s attention.
