Early Life

Dominique Jones was born in the Oakland City district of Atlanta, Georgia. When his father abandoned the family when he was two years old, his mother was left to care for him and his two sisters on her alone. While Jones did not have academic difficulties, he would frequently get into trouble. As a result, he left Booker T. Washington High School in the ninth grade.

He was charged with possession with the intent to sell at the beginning of 2012. Jones’ first attorney advised him to accept a two-year plea agreement, but Jones refused and hired a new attorney. Jones was enrolled in a unique program by this new attorney, but it was only meant to detain him for a year.

He got into a fight with a white prisoner during this show over racial remarks. After that, the initial 2-year sentence for Jones was replaced. Later in 2013, he was accused of having less than an ounce of marijuana in his possession. He was detained once more in 2014 and, among other things, was accused of possessing marijuana with intent to sell. He started his rap career with 4PF (4 Pockets Full) and Quality Control Music after serving two years in prison.

2015-2018 (Early Career)

Jones’ mixtape Perfect Timing, which included Young Thug, Lil Yachty, and other artists, was released soon after he was let out of prison. On July 18, 2017, he made available Harder Than Hard, his second mixtape. On October 9, 2017, Jones and close friend and fellow Atlanta rapper, Marlo released their joint mixtape 2 The Hard Way.

Despite having less of an impact than the two previous cassettes, this mixtape nonetheless received some media coverage. With the release of his mixtape Too Hard in December 2017, Jones began to get widespread recognition. The mixtape’s lead tune, “Freestyle,” was also released as a music video on November 5 to promote it. The video had about 400 million views on YouTube as of March 23, 2021.

The single’s success helped Jones gain a lot of attention for his mixtape. When the mixtape was ultimately made available, it included the song “All of a Sudden,” which was performed by Moneybagg Yo, a friend and American rapper.

For a large portion of Jones’ present career, this mixtape was defining. Harder Than Ever, Baby’s first studio album, debuted at number three on the US Billboard 200 chart when it was released in May 2018. The singles “Southside” and “Yes Indeed” (with Drake) helped to promote the album; the latter reached number six on the Billboard Hot 100. On the Billboard Hot 100, the song “Life Goes On” by Lil Uzi Vert and Gunna peaked at number 74.

2018-2019

After releasing Harder Than Ever, Lil Baby collaborated with labelmate and close friend Gunna to release Drip Harder on October 5, 2018. The lead single, “Drip Too Hard,” reached a peak of number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and was nominated for Best Rap/Sung Performance at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards. It later went on to be certified 9x Platinum by the RIAA and MC Platinum. Under the labels Quality Control, YSL Records, and Motown/Capitol, the mixtape was made available.

Baby made an appearance on the episode of FishCenter Live from September 2018 on Adult Swim. He released his mixtape Street Gossip in November 2018. Baby and Yung Gravy worked together on the latter’s single “Alley Oop” in December 2018.

On April 20, 2019, How High 2, the follow-up to the 2001 stoner movie How High, had its MTV premiere. He starred in it. “Out the Mud,” a song by Baby and Future, was released on June 21, 2019. Lil Baby and DaBaby collaborated on the song “Baby,” which was included on Quality Control’s second studio album, Control the Streets, Volume 2, on July 17, 2019. On the Billboard Hot 100, the song reached its apex at position 21. In advance of his second studio album My Turn, Baby released the single “Woah” on November 8th.

On the Billboard Hot 100, the song reached its apex at position 15. On November 9, 2019, Baby, along with fellow rapper Rick Ross and British producer S-X, appeared on YouTuber KSI’s song “Down Like That.” Baby performed the song for KSI’s ring walk at Staples Center for his fight against YouTuber Logan Paul. The song “Catch the Sun” from the movie Queen & Slim was published by Baby on November 15, 2019, and it afterward showed up on My Turn.

2020-2021: My Turn and The Voice of the Heroes

The second song from Lil Baby’s album, “Sum 2 Prove,” was released on January 10, 2020, and it peaked at number 16 on the Hot 100. On the US Billboard 200, the album My Turn, released on February 28, 2020, debuted at the top. Gunna, 42 Dugg, Future, Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Wayne, Moneybagg Yo, Young Thug, and Rylo Rodriguez make cameos to it. In a tie with Prince and Paul McCartney for most tracks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with 47, 12 of the songs from My Turn made it onto the chart.

My Turn reclaimed the top spot on the Billboard 200 after the publication of the album’s deluxe edition on May 1. In the midst of the George Floyd demonstrations, Lil Baby released the political song “The Bigger Picture” on June 12, 2020. Additionally, the song debuted at number three on the Billboard Hot 100, making Lil Baby’s debut as a lead artist the highest-charting song ever.

His song “We Paid” with 42 Dugg from the My Turn deluxe reached its highest point in the Hot 100’s top ten. Lil Baby was a featured artist on Pop Smoke’s “For the Night” in July 2020. The song is off Pop Smoke’s posthumous first album, Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon.

The song climbed as high as number six on the Hot 100. My Turn was the first album of the year to get a double platinum certification from the RIAA in September 2020. At the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards, “The Bigger Picture” was nominated for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song.

Lil Baby sang “The Bigger Picture” at the Grammys on March 14, 2021, to mostly favorable reviews. The following day, “Wants and Needs,” another Drake duet, debuted at number two on the Hot 100. Jones’ song “The Bigger Picture” surpassed a prior peak and made his debut, becoming his all-time highest-charting tune.

The Voice of the Heroes, Lil Baby, and Lil Durk’s studio album were released on June 4th, 2021. On the Billboard 200, the album debuted at the top spot.

2022

Lil Baby hinted on Twitter that his new album would be released in time for the summer.

The rapper teased fans with “7/?/22,” hinting at a possible July release date. The Atlanta rapper has been gradually making his way back onto the music industry this year with the releases of “In A Minute,” “Right On,” and “Frozen.” Earlier this March, Lil Baby tweeted, “It’s Gone Be A Nastyyyyy Summer,” teasing that he’s prepared to release the song during the warmer months. This tweet was used to promote the song.

On February 18, 2019, Lil Baby and entrepreneur and model Jayda Cheaves welcomed a boy. In 2016, the two started dating, and Cheaves participated in the music video for “Close Friends.” Jason, a child from Lil Baby’s previous union with Ayesha, is another child he has.

The rapper visited the White House with George Floyd’s family in May 2021, the month in which Floyd was killed. They discussed enacting the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act at their meeting with Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden. Lil Baby was detained for cannabis possession in Paris in July 2021. He was freed from police detention the following morning and given a fee to pay.

Lil baby’s son aspires to be like his father.

Jason, Lil Baby’s six-year-old son, has recently made some significant strides. He just keeps working, thus it appears that Baby has started teaching his son lessons about perseverance.

On Saturday, December 11, a video showing Jason making a music video for an unreleased original song appeared online. It’s obvious from the way he raps to the camera that he shares his father’s mannerisms and that Baby’s rapping technique is similar to his own. Jason raps lines like, “I don’t like checking the price tag/water on my wrist, big drip/diamonds on my neck, big lit.” over a trap rhythm with loud claps.
