In 1983, Steve Buscemi met artist and choreographer Jo Andres, whom he shared a house with. When she was walking to or from work, he would run out to walk his dog. That strategy succeeded, but Steve Buscemi had no idea she was seeing his face on posters for his experimental comedy pair “Steve and Mark” at the time. “I’m going to snag that guy,” she said to her friend. In 1987, they were married. In 2015, Jo found out she had ovarian cancer. Chemotherapy was administered. For a time, she was cancer-free. In 2017, it reappeared. Until her death in early January 2019, Steve and Andres were married. She had reached the age of 65 years.

Steve was in Wilmington, North Carolina, in April 2001, filming “Domestic Disturbance.” After interfering in a bar brawl between Vince Vaughn, screenwriter Scott Rosenberg, and two local males at the Firebelly Lounge, he was stabbed numerous times. After one of their girlfriends started talking to Vaughn, the two local males allegedly picked a fight. The brawl broke out around 2 a.m., and police were called to break it up. Buscemi was stabbed in the jaw, throat, and arm, as well as above one of his eyes.

He was taken to a local E.R. and treated before being released. Timothy Fogerty, aged 21, was charged with murder and assault with a deadly weapon. Two additional Wilmington guys attacked Vaughn and Rosenberg while he was being detained. They were taken into custody.

After September 11, 2001, He returned to Engine Co. 55 and spent many days sifting through the ruins of the World Trade Center with other firefighters. He spoke out in support of increased wages for firemen during a union protest in 2003. He was named an Honorary Battalion Chief of the FDNY in 2014.

Steve Buscemi pronounced his name boo-SEM-ee as a child. It’s pronounced boo-SHEM-ee in Sicily, where his family is from.
