Michel’le Toussant, now 52, is well known for her double-platinum self-titled album from 1989. Young’s mother recorded “Turn Off the Lights” for World Class Wreckin’ Cru, Dr. Dre’s R&B group with DJ Yella, when she was 16 years old in 1986.
Michel’le Toussaint used to commute to work on three buses. She was intelligent, but she had little understanding of the music industry’s inner workings, and she never received a penny from the song’s royalties.
