Matthew Gray Gubler was born on March 9, 1980, in Nevada. He is the son of Marilyn, who is a political consultant and rancher. His father is John Gubler who is an attorney.

He studied acting at the Las Vegas Academy of the Arts and graduated successfully. Gubler stated he had chosen this option because the school did not offer film-making, which was his first choice. He proceeded to the New York University Tisch School of the Arts where he studied film directing. 

Modeling Career

Gubler began his modeling career as he studied at the university. While in school, he was discovered by a modeling scout and was introduced to the job. He worked with DNA Model Management for American Eagle, Marc Jacobs, Tommy Hilfiger, and others.

Acting Career

While he worked as a model, Gubler signed a contract with Wes Anderson. Anderson asked Gubler to audition for a role in his coming movie. When Gubler did this, he emerged successfully and got the role of Nico in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.

In 2005, Gubler got the role of Dr. Spencer Reid in Criminal Minds, becoming his stepping stone to success. In 2006, he played the role of the disreputable Joe Joe in the film RV.

From 2007 to 2015, he played the role of one of the major characters in Alvin and the Chipmunks. 

He voiced Simon Serville in Alvin and the Chipmunks alongside Justin Long (Alvin), Jesse McCartney (Theodore), and Jason Lee (Dave). He was also honored to be the major character in the 2008 movie How To Be a Serial Killer.

Gubler showcased his talent through paintings by posting his works on his website. His works include gouache, pastel, oil, and watercolor. His paintings were recognized in no time.

A group show featured his arts at The Little Bird art gallery in Atwater Village, California on September 6, 2008. He contributed a painting to the Western Heritage Museum & Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame.

Juxtapoz magazine featured his paintings in July 2010. Gubler sold a watercolor named “Mushface” on eBay for $10,100. He donated this money to the Smith Center for the Performing Arts in Las Vegas.

Other Endeavors

Gubler is also an author. His first book – Rumple Buttercup: A Story of Bananas, Belonging and Being Yourself, debuted on April 2, 2019. This book ranked number one in the New York bestseller list a few weeks after its release.
