Early Life And Educational Pursuits

Nate Berkus was born in Orange County, California on September 17, 1971. His father is Michael A. Berkus, the co-founder of the National Sports Collectors Convention. His mother, Nancy Golden, is a well-known designer from multiple series on HGTV and DIY Network.

Nate grew up in a Jewish home after his parents’ divorce in 1973. He spent most of his childhood in Hopkins, Minnesota, and attended Cushing Academy in Ashburnham, Massachusetts. Berkus grew with a passion for designing and started it as soon as he left high school. 

Nate interned at Dominique Aventis in Paris and Leslie Hindman in Chicago. He studied at Lake Forest College and in 1994; he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in French and Sociology.

Nate is a brother to Dave Berkus, Barry berkus, Gunther Berkus, Josh Berkus, David Berkus and Matt Berkus. In 1995, he founded the Nate Berkus Association in Chicago.

How Nate Baerkus Started His Career

Nate backed up his design career with his writing ability. Hyperion Books published his book ‘Home Rule: Transform the Place You Live into a Place You’ll Love’ in November 2005. The book gave details on how to go about home designs and decorations.

Nate collaborated with Oprah Winfrey as the host of the show – Oprah Big Give. The show premiered on March 2, 2008, but was short-lived and ended on April 20 that year. ABC announced on the 13th of May that year that there will be no second season.

Nate founded his daily show known as The Nate Berkus Show, which Harpo Productions and Sony Pictures co-produced. On September 13, 2010, he debuted as the host of the show, which was recorded at the CBS Broadcast Center in New York. In December 2011, Sony Pictures ended the show and did not release the third season, though it aired in the nation’s largest markets.

He appeared as himself in episodes of Days of our Lives, where he designed the offices of MadWorld Cosmetics. He is also an executive producer of the movie ‘The Help’, which debuted in 2011.

On October 16, 2012, Berkus published another book with Spiegel and Grau titled ‘The Things That Matter’. It became a New York Times bestseller and the Washington post honored it as ‘One of the Best Interior Design Books of the Year’. That same month, he launched his Target Home Collections in collaboration with Target Stores.

The collection was a 150-piece line that included accessories, lighting beddings, and other home treatments. In 2013, he introduced his fabric collection at Calico Corners.

Nate’s Later Career

In March 2013, journalists announced Berkus was working on a series with NBC, which he titled ‘Renovation Nation. The name of the show changed to ‘American Dream Builders’ after it premiered. Though it was successful, it did not air again after the first season.

In 2017, Berkus and his wife – Jeremiah Brent, launched a TV show titled ‘Nate & Jeremiah by Design’. The successful show was broadcast on the TLC network and it was chosen for a second season. Berkus also helped rebuild Elliott City, Gordon Ramsay’s untimed special.

Marriage And Personal Life

After a long period of dating, Berkus became engaged to his wife, Jeremiah Brent, and finally wedded her on May 4, 2014. Their two children – Poppy and Michael – were born via surrogacy. They currently live in Manhattan.

Berkus’ daughter, Poppy, has also featured in some publications. They have appeared together in a magazine.

Berkus and his partner, Fernando, were in Sri Lanka when the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami hit. While he survived, his friend was not seen to this present day. Fernando has now been presumed dead.

This caused a lot of controversies and got fans talking. However, it was a big blow to Nath Berkus. He talked about this ordeal on the Oprah Show on January 17, 2005.
