His father was condemned to 55 years in prison shortly after Gaulden was born. His maternal grandmother took him in and nurtured him. Gaulden stayed in school until ninth grade when he quit pursuing his music career.

Gaulden was known by his aliases NBA YoungBoy or YoungBoy Never Broke Again when he first entered the music scene, but it’s unclear what prompted his name change. YoungBoy was caught for robbery and committed to a prison camp in Tallulah, Louisiana while working on his music career.

Criminal Record

Gaulden has regularly engaged in criminal behavior both before and during his professional career. In November 2016, he was detained in Austin, Texas, for one of his charges when he jumped out of a car and started shooting at a group of people.

Based on two counts of attempted first-degree murder, he was accordingly imprisoned. Gaulden was given a 10-year jail term and three years of active probation, with the first year of the sentence being suspended after pleading guilty to a lesser crime of aggravated assault with a firearm.

He was later detained in early 2018 for allegedly committing assault, kidnapping, and firearms offenses; however, he was soon released on bond.

Gaulden retaliated after being shot at by a suspect driving a black Cadillac Escalade in 2019 while on probation. Although the shooting-related charges were dropped, it was determined that Gaulden had broken his probation by hanging out with Ben Fields and Trulondrick Norman. He was thus given a 90-day jail term and a 14-month performance ban while under home arrest.

Gaulden faced more accusations in September 2020 when he was one of 16 persons detained in Baton Rouge for offenses like producing and selling drugs and having stolen weapons. The following year, when federal officials attempted to halt Gaulden’s car, he fled on foot to evade arrest on a warrant.
