Early Life

Willie Nelson was married to Shirley Collie Nelson when Paula Nelson was born out of wedlock to Willie Nelson and Connie Koepke. Shirley divorced him after learning of the baby’s birth. Following that, Willie Nelson married Koepke. Before divorcing in 1988, Nelson and Koepke had a second daughter, Amy Lee Nelson.

In September 2020, Paula’s father, Willie, and a sister named Bobbie wrote a memoir, Me and Sister Bobbie: True Tales of the Family Band. Nelson talked about his previous marriages and infidelities in the book. He also revealed his cheating scandal with his second wife, Shirley Collie. Nelson told how Collie found out about Paula Carlene’s birth and his extramarital involvement with the baby’s mother, Connie Nelson, while they were still married. As he puts it, “Shirley saw a bill from a Houston hospital. I tried to play it off as no big deal. I told her that I had to go to the hospital for something minor.”

The artist went on to say, “Shirley wasn’t buying that for one simple reason: The bill said the charges were for the birth of a baby girl, Paula Carlene, born to a Mrs. Connie Nelson.”

Willie went on to say, “Shirley wanted to know who in the hell was Connie Nelson. Couldn’t lie. Was caught flatfooted. Had to get the words out of my mouth. ‘Connie’s my girlfriend and Paula’s our daughter.”

Willie’s then-fiancée Koepke gave birth to their daughter Paula in Houston on October 27, 1969. Nelson also has six half-siblings from a previous relationship with her father.

Paula used to go on tour with her father as a child. Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter, two-country musicians, were frequent visitors.

The family relocated to Colorado when Paula was a child, and they lived in Conifer, Colorado, and Upper Bear Creek, near Evergreen, Colorado. Paula and her family moved to Austin, Texas, when she was 16 years old, and she attended Westlake High School. She started using drugs, including cocaine, and then went to a drug recovery center in San Diego.

Austin Chronicle, she recalled “I was 16 and had been living in Colorado since grade school where it didn’t matter, but to be Willie Nelson’s daughter in Texas was huge. [By 12th grade], I was doing a lot of coke, anything I could get my hands on, really. Adolescent angst. I got tired: tired of the scene, tired of it all.”

Paula Nelson became a counselor soon after she recovered from her addictions. Paula, on the other hand, continued to use marijuana. When her tour bus was stopped by authorities in Texas for speeding in 2014, the musician was arrested. When the officers found out that Willie Nelson’s daughter was aboard the bus, they began hunting for drugs, discovering marijuana as well. Paula was briefly imprisoned after the event.
