The company started operations in 1988, after the dissolution of the partnership between Sony and Nintendo over corporate financial misunderstandings. Back then, Ken Kutaragi, who later on became “the father of PlayStation” was working as a manager in one of Sony’s hardware engineering departments. In a fit of rage, the CEO of Sony summoned and instructed him to create an idea that could compete with Nintendo.

In June 1992, Kutaragi presented a CD-ROM-based system that employed the use of 3D graphics to play video games in a board meeting with the executives. Despite opposition because of uncertainty from the executives, Sony launched the project. This outcome inspired the 3D illusion PlayStation logo, which Sakamoto designed.

Together with a team of developers, creative minds, and the support of some executives, Kutaragi formed The Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI). They began working on the manufacture and distribution of testing consoles and before January 1995; they had incredible sales. This was possible because of the low price of the product and the cheapness of CD-ROM manufacture.

Sony sold each PlayStation console with instructions and equipment to control it, making it easier for customers to use.
