Early Life

Pokimane was born in Morocco. She began playing video games in her early years and quickly developed a fondness for the title “League of Legends.”

Later, she relocated to Los Angeles, where she began broadcasting video game-related content on her Twitch channel. She immediately began gaining subscribers and followers, which gave her the self-assurance to investigate other social media networks.

Career

Twitch Streaming

In June 2013, Anys opened an account on Twitch. Once she had attained Platinum status in League of Legends, she started streaming later that year using a $250 PC she had purchased off of a classified website. Pokimane is a combination of her name Imane and the word Pokémon.

She garnered around 450,000 Twitch followers in 2017, propelling her account into the top 100 most-followed accounts on the website. The Shorty Awards recognized her as the Best Twitch Streamer of the year as a result of her account’s growth on the site in 2017.

According to the Shorty Awards, she became well-known on Twitch thanks to her gaming and comments on the popular game League of Legends. In a League of Legends trailer introducing a new game format, Anys made a brief appearance.

Pokemane has a reputation for streaming Fortnite gameplay and commentary. She started broadcasting the game as part of a sponsorship. Epic Games, the company behind Fortnite, organized a pro-am competition at E3 in 2018. Anys was matched with rapper Desiigner, however, just before the event, Josh Hart took Anys’ position. The event paired streamers with mainstream celebrities in a game of Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode.

Pokemane addressed her decreasing Fortnite streams in the middle of March 2019 and said she needs to  “think about what I like or dislike about the content that I’ve been making.”

Pokemane engages with her audience frequently, according to the tech news website Digital Trends, which called her “laid-back but enthusiastic personality” “perfectly suited to long-form streams.” Anys not only streams video games but also podcasts and transmits other real-world events.

Twitch has a direct partnership with Pokemane one of the more well-known streamers on the network. She was chosen by Twitch in July 2018 as one of 15 ambassadors for the upcoming TwitchCon convention.

Later on, in the same month, Twitch booked Anys to participate with them as a partner in their Twitch Creator Camp, a set of broadcasts and articles meant to aid content creators in creating successful channels.

Pokemane and Twitch agreed to a multi-year exclusivity in March 2020. Anys was ranked as the 9th most popular user on Twitch by Social Blade as of December 21, 2021, with more than 8.5 million followers.

As part of a get-out-the-vote campaign for the 2020 US presidential election, Anys worked with US legislators Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar as well as a number of other well-known streamers, including Disguised Toast and HasanAbi, for a session of Among Us in late October 2020.

Anys was recognized as a featured honoree in the 2021 Forbes 30 Under 30 list for the “Games” category, where it was highlighted that she was notable for being the largest female Twitch streamer and one of the OfflineTV founders. In July 2021, she had 8.5 million Twitch followers.

Following a DMCA lawsuit from ViacomCBS on January 8, 2022, Anys’ Twitch account was suspended for 48 hours in the middle of an Avatar: The Last Airbender watch stream. JiDion viewers broke into Anys’ feed later in the month.

Later, when he was banned, streamer Ninja saw and promised to utilize his connections to have the ban lifted. Anys critiqued Ninja’s reaction, pointing out in particular how she used the word “bitches” when discussing the matter. Anys renewed his contract with Twitch in February 2022.

Anys has a number of YouTube channels, including Pokimane, Pokimane Too, Pokimane VODS, Poki ASMR, and imane, in addition to streaming on Twitch. While Pokimane Too comprises unrelated clips of her gaming content, vlogs, and podcast, Pokimane features edited gaming footage from streams.

Complete, unedited VOD footage of feeds is released to the Pokimane VODS channel. Although Anys has stopped adding to the channel, the Poki ASMR channel had videos that are a part of a larger YouTube community of ASMR content.

Anys is a contributor to OfflineTV, a YouTube channel run by content producers.  “it’s not fun being a streamer and living alone, so we decided to come together in a way so we not only keep each other company but we can also collab and actually do good work and content for everyone else.” Anys said in reference to the channel.

Other Ventures

Shawn Levy’s Free Guy, which will be released in August 2021, will feature Anys and a number of other online stars, it was revealed in October 2019.

Anys became a partner and creative director of Markiplier and Jacksepticeye’s clothing line Cloak in June 2020. The music video for Bella Poarch’s song “Inferno,” which was released in August 2021, had Anys in a cameo role.

Anys will serve as the Chief Creative Officer of RTS, a talent management and brand consultancy company that was announced in October 2021.
