Prichard Colon, who is fully known as Prichard colon Melendez is a former American Puerto Rican boxer that was honored WBC world champion, and the winner of the gold medal at the 2010 Pan American Youth Championship in the 64kg category.

Who is Prichard Colon?

On September 19, 1992, He was born to Richard Colon, his father, and Nerves Melendez, his mother. However, around the age of 10 years, his family relocated to Puerto Rico, so he could personify the island in competition. They lived in the rural town of Orocovia, Puerto Rico.

Hobbyist career and Education of Prichard Colon

At the Albergue Olimpico, He began his hobbyist career in Salinas, Puerto Rico, and he was given the nickname “Digget” which comes from the word “digger” because of his height.

However, Prichard Colon began studying Business Administration at the Universidad del Sagrado Corazon in San Juan, Puerto, Rico after graduating high school.

The former boxer became popular during his hobbyist career as the winner of 5 national championships in both the 141 and 152-pound visions. At Brazil Pre Olympics for the qualification to 2012 Summer Olympics in London, He fought with a Venezuelan boxer and Prichard lost the fight in the third round. He had a record of 170-15 after his retirement from his hobbyist career.

Professional career of Prichard Colon

On February 23, 2013, He made his professional introduction and his weight was considered to be lightweight, also known as a super welterweight. His first fight was against Xavier La Salle at Cosme Beita Salamo Coliseum in Catano, Puerto Rico. Prichard knocked out La Salle in the first round.

Furthermore, a fight was held between Prichard Colon and Vivian harris, on September 29, 2015, at the Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto. The fight ended in the fourth round when Prichard knocked out Harris who has more experience.

One month after the fight against Vivian Harris, he was scheduled to fight Terrel Williams in an undercard fight on October 17, 2015, at the Eagle Bank Arena in Fairfax, Virginia.

Although the fight wasn’t actually scheduled when Andre Dirrell could no longer fight with Blake Caparello for medical reasons, Prichard colon’s fight with Terrel Williams became scheduled

However, the fight between Prichard and Wiliams ended in the 9th round, but Prichard Colon was ahead in the first 5 rounds. During the fight, Williams was punching Prichard in the back of the head illegally. He reported to the referee but, the referee replied “you take care of it”. Moreover, Prichard has penalized 2 points for a low blow.

In the 9th round, Prichard was knocked down twice and he complained to the ringside doctor that he was feeling dizzy and precede on. The former boxer lost the fight when his corner mistakenly think that the fight has ended by removing his gloves, so he was disqualified.

Tragic incident of Prichard Colon

However, after the fight when Prichard left the ring, he was vomiting and was instantly taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital in Virginia where he was examined to be suffering from brain bleeding and also he was referred to Shepherd Center Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. As a result of the fight, he went into a coma for 221 days.

After being taken to different hospitals, Prichard eventually moved back to stay in his mother’s house in Orlando, Florida. he had remained in the persistent vegetative stage.

Furthermore, Prichard’s parents filed a lawsuit against the ringside doctors, promoters, organizers of 50 million dollars.

In the Super Court of the District of Columbia, Richard Colon filed doctor Asbly for his carelessness as the coach doctor when Prichard was bespeaking the problems how he felt in the 7th round.

Richard claimed that his son informed the doctor about his head after Williams punched him.

The lawsuit also reported that the Co-organizers Head Banging Boxing and DiBella Entertainment couldn’t get an able and skilled doctor on the ringside.

The former boxer had to pass through a sudden brain operation to move a subdural hematoma and alleviate pressure on his skull.

Moreover, The purpose of 50 million dollars is to give Prichard longer care throughout his life. The lawsuit has not yet been settled, though Nieves Melendez believes it may never be settled.

In an interview, Terrel Williams said “I pray for Prichard every day. That’s never going to change. I wish him nothing but peace and health. No one wants happened to Prichard to happen to anybody.”

Williams said it’s also been hard for him that he never sought to fight again. Although he didn’t blame himself for anything instead he prayed. Also, Williams said  “I wish the young man really well. It’s a hard situation on me and a hard situation for Colon’s family. We were in a hard, tough fight. Things happen in boxing. It’s a contact sport. Do I wish that had happened to Colon? Of course not! I’m a man of faith and I know I’m a good man. I pray and I may not have all of the answers but I am walking in the right path. One thing I won’t do is question God. Things happen.”

Recovery of Prichard Colon

The World Boxing Council proclaimed Prichard Colon had surgery and it was successful. It was discovered that a fragment was removed to replace a plate for the collapse of his skull that was pressing on the brain.

Prichard’s mother, Nieves posted a video of Prichard on her Facebook in which he can be seen taking therapy and reacting to verbal commands. She said Prichard was learning how to communicate with a computer. She was posting videos on Youtube of Prichard’s recovery.

In June 2021, a user on Tik Tok called Nikemo123 shared a post on Tik Tok, and at that period the clip had more than 80,000 likes. The user wrote “Hope you get well one day Prichard,” besides the clips of the boxer’s condition.

Prichard Colon was a well-known talented and hardworking boxer during his time. He fought 5 times in 2013 and 7 times in 2014. From 2013, he had 16 wins in his professional career. Prichard has been undefeated until his last match, which eventually ended his last entire career.
