On September 17, 1951, Cassandra Peterson was born in Manhattan, Kansas. Cassandra spent three months in the hospital after being burned by boiling water when she was quite little. She needed skin grafts for more than 35% of her body. Peterson spoke of the event as follows:  “I was severely burned, and I felt a little like a monster myself. I think I related to people like Frankenstein and The Mummy. The burns made me feel like an outcast and a loner.”

Career

When Peterson performed in “Vive Les Girls!” at The Dunes at the age of 17, she was dubbed the “youngest showgirl in Las Vegas.” She relocated to Italy in the early 1970s and joined the bands The Snails and I Latins Ochanats as their main vocalist. Cassandra performed on tour with the musical/comedy group Mammas Boys after coming home, and in 1979, she became a member of the improv group The Groundlings. She started hosting “Elvira’s Movie Macabre” in 1981, and from 1982 to 1983, she was a radio host on KROQ-FM 106.7.

Peterson and her best friend Robert Redding created Elvira’s persona after being hired for “Movie Macabre,” and the producers allowed them to do so. Maila Nurmi, who played Vampira on the program, sent the producers a cease and desist letter before to the premiere, but the court sided with Cassandra on the grounds that “‘likeness’ requires true portrayal of another person’s features, and not simply near similarity.”

Elvira’s Halloween Special” (1986), “Elvira: Mistress of the Dark” (1988), “Elvira’s Haunted Hills” (2001), “CHiPs” (1982), “Space Ghost Coast to Coast” (1996), “The Martin Short Show” (1997), and “Medium” are just a few of the works in which Peterson played Elvira (2009). In 2015, 2016, and 2019, she further made a cameo appearance as a guest judge on the Food Network competition “Halloween Wars.” Elvira action figures, comic novels, calendars, pinball machines, and of course, Halloween costumes were all popular in the 1980s and 1990s. In addition to hosting “Elvira’s Movie Macabre” from 2010 to 2011, Peterson also starred in “13 Nights of Elvira” on Hulu in 2014.

Several albums, including “Elvira Presents Vinyl Macabre: Oldies but Ghoulies” (1983), “Elvira Presents Haunted Hits” (1987), “Elvira Presents Monster Hits” (1994), and “Elvira’s Gravest Hits,” have also been released by the artist.

A lot of Cassandra’s roles were not as Elvira. She had uncredited roles in the films “Diamonds are Forever” (1971) and “Roma” (1972) before “Elvira’s Movie Macabre.” She subsequently made an appearance in “The Working Girls” in 1974, then “Coast to Coast” and “Cheech and Chong’s Next Movie” in 1980.

Cassandra Peterson starred in the 1982 film “Jekyll and Hyde… Together Again,” “The Sting II,” and “Stroker Ace,” and in the 1985 comedy “Pee-Big wee’s Adventure,” she played a “biker mother.” In the 1986 film “Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold,” Cassandra co-starred with Sharon Stone and Richard Chamberlain. She also acted in the movies “Echo Park,” “Ted & Venus,” and “It’s My Party” (1996).

Along with the TV shows “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” (2013–2017) and “JJ Villard’s Fairy Tales,” she also provided the voices for the animated features “The Haunted World of El Superbeasto” (2009) and “LEGO Scooby-Doo! In addition to being inducted into the Horror Host Hall Of Fame in 2012, Peterson got a Lifetime Achievement Award from Hollywood Horrorfest in 2018. She was welcomed into the organization’s Monster Kid Hall of Fame in 2017 and received a Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Award in 2011 for Favorite Horror Host. In addition to being nominated for a Best Actress Saturn Award for “Elvira: Mistress of the Dark” in 1990, Cassandra received the Spirit of Silver Lake Award at the 2001 Los Angeles Silver Lake Film Festival.
