In Florida’s Winter Park, Summer Phoenix was born. Arlyn Sharon (née Dunetz), her mother, was born in New York to Jewish parents of Russian and Hungarian ancestry. Her father, John Lee Bottom, is of English, German, and French descent and was born in California. After meeting Phoenix’s father while traveling, Phoenix’s mother relocated to California in 1968. After getting married in 1969, they eventually joined the Children of God religious cult and began serving as missionaries in South America.
