Early Life

On March 18, 1963, in the Bronx, New York, Vanessa Lynn Williams was born. Both Milton and Helen Williams’ parents were music educators. When Vanessa was a year old, her parents relocated her and her brother Chris to Millwood, New York’s affluent suburbs, where they were able to find employment as music educators in the town’s public schools.

Williams grew up around music, and by the time she was 10, she had nearly entirely devoted herself to dance and music. She studied classical and jazz dance as well as theatre arts with the goal of becoming the first African American Rockette. She was also a prodigy on the piano, violin, and French horn.

Williams was a hard worker who excelled in school and was a natural performer who won the Presidential Scholarship for Drama after graduation and was accepted into the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania theatrical arts department at Carnegie Mellon University. Williams made the decision to enroll at Syracuse University in upstate New York despite being one of just 12 students admitted into Carnegie Mellon’s program that year.

Williams, then 19 years old and a student at Syracuse, accepted a position with local photographer Tom Chiapel as his receptionist and cosmetics artist during the summer before his wedding. Chiapel routinely coordinated nude female picture shoots, so she jumped at the opportunity when the photographer indicated an interest in utilizing Williams as a model. Williams posed for two sessions in New York City with Chiapel, then for the third session with a different photographer. She requested the negatives, believing they had been burned because she wasn’t happy with how explicit the third shot was.

Williams went back to Syracuse in the fall to pursue her studies in music and theater. She received a request to compete in the Miss Greater Syracuse pageant around this time. Williams was initially hesitant to participate in the tournament, but she ultimately did and handily won. She later won the 1983 Miss New York title.

Six months after competing in her first beauty pageant, Williams made history on September 17, 1983, when she was named the first African American Miss America. Along with a $25,000 scholarship, she also received instant notoriety and a number of commercial endorsements as part of her reward.

In July 1984, as her one-year rule was coming to a close, Williams discovered herself embroiled in a scandal. After the incident, it appeared that Williams would never be able to have a respectable career in Hollywood. With the exception of a few TV sitcom appearances and a few offers to act in adult films, the former beauty queen was virtually disregarded by the film business.

Since mainstream record labels were hesitant to support the entertainer’s less-than-wholesome image, a music career was also starting to seem unlikely. After several months of litigation that seemed to go nowhere, a case against Penthouse appeared to be ineffective. Williams’ career was restarted by Hervey, who assisted her in securing a recording deal with PolyGram and provided encouragement as her 1988 album, The Right Stuff, was released. Three singles “The Right Stuff,” “He’s Got the Look,” and “Dreamin'” entered the top 10 and helped the album reach gold status. “I want to apologize for anything that was said or done that made you feel any less the Miss America you are and the Miss America you always will be,” Haskell told Williams onstage during the televised show. She responded by saying the apology was “so unexpected but so beautiful.”
