Vivica Fox moved to California in 1988 to enrol at Golden West College. She began her career as a professional actor while living in California, initially appearing as Carmen Silva on the NBC daytime drama Days of Our Lives in 1988.

She made her acting debut as a hooker in Oliver Stone’s war drama Born on the Fourth of July (1989), and in the ABC comedy series Living Dolls, a spin-off of the sitcom Who’s the Boss? she was cast as Emily Franklin in the pilot episode before Halle Berry took her place for the remaining episodes. Later that year, Generations, an NBC daytime serial series, cast Fox as its star, Maya Reubens.
