Jet Li – Background

Jet Li was born in Beijing, China on 26 April 1963, being the youngest in the family. Two years after his birth, his father Li Qingquan passed away, and they grew up in abject poverty. As Li schooled, he practised Wushu until his talent for the sport finally began to surface.

Wushu Career

With his gift, some top-known coaches, including Li Junfeng and Wu Bin, put in efforts to develop him. They even went ahead to buy him meals to develop his physical fitness and protein level. At the young age of 12, Li competed amongst adults and won first place, creating a name for himself.

Li kept on with his practice and kept grooming himself in several Wushu skills till he became master of them. He is especially known for his Changquan and Fanziquan styles. He has also studied other styles in addition to Wushu’s main weapons – Gun, Dao, and Jian.

At the age of 18, Li retired from Wushu after sustaining a knee injury. However, Li remained a coach to other people in later years. His martial skills eventually gave root to his acting career.

Acting Career

After his retirement from Wushu, Li began his career in martial arts filming. It was in the course of this that a publicity company thought his name too hard to pronounce. They then called him ‘Jet’ for his speed in his Wushu training with his real name to form Jet Li.

Since then, he has played major movie roles, starting with locations like China and Hong Kong. He made his debut with the film Shaolin Temple in 1982 and played more movie roles after this first success.
