Career

Ayala began singing and rapping when he was just 13 years old, but he wasn’t able to concentrate on his music career until he was recovering from his gunshot wounds. He mixed his approach with the styles of Vico C, DJ Playero, DJ Nelson, and DJ Drako to create one of the earliest performers of Reggaeton, a type of Spanish-language dancehall reggae. On DJ Playero‘s 1991 mixtape “Playero 34,” he made one of his earliest musical debuts with the song “So’ Persigueme, No Te Detengas.” “No Mercy” (1995), released through White Lion Records and BM Records in Puerto Rico, was his first official solo studio effort.

He proceeded to appear on several DJ Playero’s mixtapes during the 1990s, many of which the Puerto Rican authorities banned due to their explicit lyrics. He is regarded as one of the forerunners of the Reggaeton genre, and together with DJ Playero, he is sometimes given credit for coining the phrase in 1994. On their 1994 album “Playero 36,” the duo adopted the phrase to characterize their music.

Daddy Yankee and rapper Nas worked together on the song “The Profecy” in 1997. Then he issued “El Cartel” (1997) and “El Cartel II,” two compilation albums (2001). They had great success in Puerto Rico but had little real impact elsewhere in Latin America. When he published the album “El Cangri.com” in 2002, he experienced his first significant global success. He has worked on the albums “Mas Flow” (2003) and “Mas Flow 2” (2005) with renowned reggaetón producers Luny Tunes, as well as a collaboration with Nicky Jam known as Los Cangris, a compilation album called “Los Homerun-es,” and other projects during this early stage of his career.

El Cartel Records and VI Music jointly released “Barrio Fino,” Ayala’s third studio album as a solo artist, in 2004. It was the debut album from Ayala’s record label, El Cartel Records, which he shares with Andres Hernandez. The record was popular worldwide and sold more than 500,000 copies in the US alone. A worldwide tour that included stops in the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Honduras, Spain, Colombia, Argentina, Venezuela, and the United States followed the album. “Gasolina,” one of the album’s tracks, became a great international smash.

As a featured artist on N.O.R.E.’s single “Oye Mi Canto,” which peaked at number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, he continued to have success. He received numerous international accolades in 2005, enhancing his standing as a top Latin music performer. The “Barrio Fino” album won Album of the Year at the Lo Nuestro Awards, Reggaeton Album of the Year at the Latin Billboard Awards, “Gasolina” received eight nominations and seven awards at the second Premios Juventud ceremony, as well as nominations for the Latin Grammy and MTV Video Music Awards. The success of “Gasolina” sparked the development of a brand-new radio format in the US and the “Latin Rhythm Airplay” Billboard chart.

Time magazine named Daddy Yankee one of the 100 most influential people in 2006, citing the success of his album “Barrio Fino,” which sold over 2 million copies, as well as his $20 million recording deal with Interscope Records and his sponsorship of Pepsi.

Daddy Yankee has since put out several further albums, including “El Cartel: The Big Boss” (2007), “Mundial” (2010), and “Prestige” (2012). Additionally, he has made cameo performances on the reggaeton compilation albums “Mas Flow: Los Benjamins,” “Echo Presenta: Invasión,” and “Caribbean Connection” (2006). Additionally, the 2017 single “Despacito,” a collaboration with Latin pop musician Luis Fonsi, was one of his most notable hits since “Gasolina.” and “Macarena” in 1996, it was the first song in Spanish to reach the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Additionally, on April 20, 2017, the music video for “Despacito” passed the billion-view mark, making it the most watched video ever on YouTube. Ayala was the first Latin musician to do so, and the success of “Despacito” made him the most-listened-to artist in the world on the streaming service Spotify in 2017. Ayala has received 270 nominations and has won 82 awards as of 2017.
