Adolph Rapper Robert Thornton Jr., better known by his stage name Young Dolph, was from the United States. King of Memphis, his first studio album, was released in 2016 and reached its peak position of 49 on the Billboard 200 chart. He was a part of O.T. Genasis’s smash song “Cut It,” which peaked at number 35 on the Billboard Hot 100. Rich Slave, Young Dolph’s seventh album, debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 in 2020 and went on to become his highest charting album. In Memphis, Tennessee, on November 17, 2021, he was shot and murdered.

Early Life
On July 27, 1985, in Chicago, Illinois, Adolph Robert Thornton Jr. was born. His family relocated to Memphis, Tennessee, when he was two years old. He had two brothers and two sisters, and he was a second cousin of the rapper Juice Wrld. Thornton’s parents were crack cocaine addicts, and as a boy, he only saw them sometimes. Thornton was primarily reared by his grandmother.
According to Thornton, many of his contemporaries in the South Memphis neighborhood where he grew up were raised by their grandparents as a result of problems their parents had. He claimed that he first thought of his grandmother as “the meanest motherfucker in the world,” adding, “I didn’t get that shit at the time…. All the shit she was telling you, you get to seeing that shit when you hit about 15,” adding that when he got to that age, he started using her teachings to become more independent throughout the rest of his life.

While occasionally letting homeless acquaintances stay with the family, Thornton’s grandmother frequently forbade guests from visiting their homes. Thornton went to Hamilton High School while he was a teenager.
Career
Young Dolph’s debut mixtape, Paper Route Campaign, was made available in 2008. He published Welcome 2 Dolph World the same year he officially launched Paper Route Empire, an independent record label that is not connected to a big record label, two years later.
Young Dolph started to develop his own rap flow with the release of the mixtapes High-Class Street Music and High-Class Street Music Episode 2 in 2011, moving away from a style resembling that of Memphis rappers Three 6 Mafia and 8Ball & MJG and toward a personal style dubbed “vociferous” with a “magnetic delivery and uniquely deep voice.”
In August 2014, Memphis rapper Yo Gotti offered Young Dolph a record deal with his Collective Music Group label, which is associated with Epic Records. Young Dolph declined, opting to stay independent, despite Yo Gotti’s offer and Young Dolph’s growing success.
Yo Gotti responded with a song after Young Dolph’s “Play Wit Yo’ Bitch” hate track against him was released in 2017. Blac Youngsta and two other males were detained after the shooting, but the charges were eventually dropped for lack of evidence. Young Dolph promoted his second studio album, Bulletproof, using the exposure generated by the shooting. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds in September 2017. He published the extended play Niggas Get Shot Every Day in February 2018 and made reference to the earlier incident in it.
After meeting Key Glock at family events in 2017, Young Dolph signed the Memphis rapper to his Paper Route Empire label. Key Glock is his cousin by marriage. They released the song “Major” in 2018, and it reached its top position of number 47 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Young Dolph claimed to have declined a $22 million label deal that had been made to him in the same year. In a later interview, Young Dolph disclosed that he had inked a record deal with Empire Distribution. His September 2018 album Role Model was published on the Paper Route Empire label, a partnership between that label and Empire Distribution.
Young Dolph and Key Glock teamed up once more in July 2019 to release their debut joint album, which they titled Dum and Dummer to reference the Farrelly brothers’ comedy Dumb and Dumber.
Each of the musicians received their first top 10 albums when the album reached its peak at number eight on the Billboard 200. BandPlay, who produced the album, utilized a range of beat patterns across its tracks.

Early in 2020, there were rumors that Young Dolph was thinking about giving up music to spend more time with his kids. He was also spotted more regularly in Memphis. “Highly considering quitting the music business because I really wanna be with my kids 24/7,” Young Dolph stated on Instagram.
Young Dolph released the tune “Sunshine” and altered album covers of earlier albums on streaming sites to include people wearing surgical masks to draw attention to and address the global problem during the COVID-19 outbreak in the United States.
Young Dolph and Key Glock released the song “Aspen” on March 5, 2021. On March 26, 2021, their second joint album, Dum & Dummer 2, followed. It is a follow-up to 2019’s Dum & Dummer and featured both solo songs and collaborations with both performers. The cartoon graphics for the project makes reference to Beavis and Butt-Head.
Young Dolph’s small Paper Route Empire label disseminated the record. There’s a casualness to their rapport and individual flows that never makes itself too obvious, according to Nadine Smith, who gave the album a 7.5/10 rating in her Pitchfork review. “Dolph & Glock fashion themselves in the image of pop culture dunces even if at the same time they’re poised, extravagant, and immaculate,” she wrote.

Long Live Young Dolph, a posthumous tribute album, was announced on January 10, 2022, and it was formally released on January 21, 2022, via Paper Route Empire. It was preceded by the single “LLD (Long Live Dolph)” being made available. PRE affiliates Key Glock, Big Moochie Grape, Kenny Muney, Jay Fizzle, Joddy Badass, Snupe Bandz, Paper Route Woo, and Chitana make cameo performances on the compilation album.
In 2022, Dolph’s Paper Route Frank posthumous album will be made available.
Death
Thornton was shot and killed in Memphis on November 17, 2021, while purchasing cookies for his mother from Makeda’s Homemade Butter Cookies, a store he frequented when traveling back home. He was killed by two gunmen driving a white Mercedes-Benz two-door.
Thornton suffered 22 gunshot wounds, according to an autopsy. For hours, large crowds of hundreds of people flocked the scene of Thornton’s death; police had to barricade the area while they conducted an investigation. In response, Memphis councilman J. B. Smiley and Tennessee House Representative London Lamar called for a curfew in Memphis to stop rioting and bloodshed.
The funeral for Young Dolph took place on November 30, 2021. First Baptist Church Broad Street had a service. Security and Memphis Police accompanied the family’s convoy of black SUVs to the graveyard next to Young Dolph’s high school, Hamilton High School.
Due to the seriousness of the charges and the discovery processes undertaken by the defendants’ attorneys, it is possible that the trial for those accused of killing Young Dolph will not take place until 2024.
