On May 26, 1975, Lauryn Noelle Hill was born in Newark, New Jersey. With her mother Valerie, an English teacher, father Mal, a computer and management consultant, and older brother Malaney, she grew up in a Baptist family in South Orange, New Jersey. Mal sang in weddings and nightclubs, Valerie played the piano, and Lauryn’s family enjoyed the music.
