Marc Anthony is an American singer, songwriter, and actor born Marco Antonio Muz Rivera on September 16, 1968. He is the most successful tropical salsa performer ever. The three-time Grammy Award winner has sold more than 12 million albums worldwide and is a six-time Latin Grammy Award winner. Anthony, who is well-known for his Latin-flavored salsa songs and ballads, has received numerous honors and prizes for his accomplishments.
He received the 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI). Early Life
Marc Anthony, whose real name is Marco Antonio Muiz, was born in New York City. His father, Felipe, worked in the hospital cafeteria and played music, while his mother, Guillermina, was a stay-at-home mother. His parents were from Puerto Rico, both of them. Music Career
For the first few years of his career, Marc Antonio Muiz worked as a session vocalist for underground New York house musicians and freestyle artists. Anthony performed as a lyricist and backing vocalist for musical groups Menudo and the Latin Rascals after changing his name to prevent confusion with his namesake. Anthony cemented his place as one of the most significant new salsa performers to emerge in the 1990s by selling more salsa recordings than any other performer on the earth by the early 1990s.
Marc Anthony achieved fame playing a salsa style that drew more heavily from the African American and urban genres he listened to growing up, such as rhythm and blues and house than the more politically engaged New York salsa musicians of the 1960s and 1970s or the highly produced “romantic” salsa artists of the 1980s.
“Rebel,” a freestyle music album, was his debut release and it came out on Bluedog Records in 1988. Marc collaborated with Little Louie Vega and Todd Terry to write “You Should Know By Now,” a duet with Chrissy I-eece, the following year in 1990. He contributed vocals to “Love Change,” which is on the flip-side of a 12″ vinyl album called “Here’s Your Hat,” produced by Todd Terry, in 1992 while still working with Todd Terry. The album was issued by Elan and The Power machine.
He also worked with music producer Little Louie Vega, who featured the vocalist on numerous dance songs with a freestyle influence, including “Ride On The Rhythm” and the album “When The Night Is Over,” which contained the freestyle anthem “Time.” At Madison Square Garden in New York, Vega and Anthony served as Tito Puente’s opening act in 1992. He transitioned from freestyle to salsa and other Latin forms after 1992.
His decision to pursue a career in salsa music was originally resisted, but he ultimately changed his mind and collaborated with RMM Records to produce his Spanish-language debut, “Otra Nota,” in 1993. He followed this up with the album “Todo a su tiempo” (1995), which earned him a Grammy nomination and a Billboard award for Hot Tropical Artist of the Year. More than 800,000 copies of the album have been sold, and it has received a Gold certification from both the United States and Puerto Rico.
In 1997, he issued “Contra La Corriente.” “Y Huubo Alguien,” from the album, became his first No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks list and the first salsa musician-penned song to do so. Additionally, it was the debut of a salsa album on the Billboard 200 chart. In 1999, he joined Sony Records after leaving RMM.

Acting Career
With minor roles in movies like “Hackers” (1995), “Big Night” (1996), and “The Substitute,” Marc Anthony made his acting debut (1996). Alongside Ruben Blades and Ednita Nazario, he then had an appearance in the theatrical musical “The Capeman” in 1998. There were 68 performances of the theatrical production in all.
