Duane Lee Chapman, commonly known as Dog the Bounty Hunter, is an American television personality, bounty hunter, and former bail bondsman who was born on February 2, 1953.
Chapman was convicted of first-degree murder in 1976 and sentenced to five years in prison in Texas. He was waiting in a getaway car as his friend shot and killed Jerry Oliver, 69, following a scuffle over a marijuana trade. Chapman was imprisoned at the Texas State Penitentiary in Huntsville, Texas, for 18 months.
His Early Life
Duane Lee Chapman, better known as Dog the Bounty Hunter, was born in Denver, Colorado. Wesley Duane Chapman, a welder who later became a bail bondsman, and Barbara Darlene Chapman are his parents. Story Of Andrew Luater’s Capture
Duane Chapman gained international headlines in June 2003 when he kidnapped Andrew Luster, the heir to the Max Factor cosmetics empire. Luster was accused of drugging and rapping a number of women and had fled the United States in the midst of his trial. Luster was convicted of 86 crimes while he was out on bail. In Mexico, Duane Chapman and his “hunt squad” (his son, Leland, and buddy Tim Chapman–oddly, the two Chapmans are unrelated) apprehended Luster. The four were arrested and taken to jail while on their way to take Luster to jail. Luster’s identification was established, and he was shipped to California to begin serving his 125-year sentence.
Bail was denied to the other three men. The men were granted bail after Dog’s wife, Beth Chapman, contacted the media. They left Mexico on their lawyer’s instructions, therefore making themselves international bail jumpers. The three were arrested by US Marshals three years later, just days before the statute of limitations on the crime expired, on behalf of the Mexican government, which had accused them of the deprivation of liberty and illegal bounty hunting. A resolution was enacted in 2007 after numerous state delegates requested that the extradition charges against Dog the Bounty Hunter be dropped. Duane Chapman’s Career
Take This Job and Dominick Dunne’s Power, Privilege, and Justice featured him. His show Dog the Bounty Hunter premiered on A&E in 2004. It showed Dog and his colleagues apprehending criminals and bail jumpers. The show aired for eight seasons until being terminated in 2012.

Dog the Bounty Hunter has had five marriages and has eleven offspring. In 1972, he married La Fonda Sue Darnell, and they divorced in 1977 when Dog was found guilty of murder. She was, of course, given custody of their two children. After their mother was charged with a crime and they were placed in foster care, Chapman was awarded custody once more. He married Ann Tegnell in 1979, shortly after his release from prison.
From 1982 to 1991, he was married to Lyssa Rae Brittain. After Chapman had arrested her for cocaine possession, he married Tawny Marie Chapman in 1988 and she became his secretary. They divorced in 2002 with no children from their marriage.
Beth Barmore was his fifth marriage. They enjoyed an on-again, off-again relationship until May 20, 2006, when they married. Beth and her partner had a Bail Bonds business together, and she was a regular on Dog the Bounty Hunter. Beth passed away on June 26, 2019 in Hawaii as a result of throat cancer.
