A chance encounter between Michael Shanks and his future wife, Lexa Doig, took place in the Canadian/American science fiction series Andromeda (2000). In the movie, Michael Shanks played a guest role alongside his future wife, Lexa. 

But Andromeda isn’t the only television show in which this great duo has made an appearance. In fact, they appeared in the television series Stargate SG-1 (2005-07) and the action-thriller Tactical Force (2011). In the latter film, Shanks played a Russian crime leader, and Doig played a Los Angeles Police Department SWAT officer.

Shanks was born in Vancouver and raised in Kamloops, British Columbia after he moved there as a child. He studied acting at the University of British Columbia from 1990 to 1994. After finishing a two-year apprenticeship at the world-renowned Stratford Festival in Ontario, he appeared in several stage productions worldwide. 

The actor appeared in television shows, like Highlander before landing the role of Daniel Jackson on Stargate SG-1. He also starred in the television movie A Family Divided and had a brief role in The Call of the Wild.

During the first five seasons of Stargate SG-1, Shanks played archaeologist Dr. Daniel Jackson, a role he held for five seasons before leaving the program at the end of the fifth season. This was due to disagreements with his character’s underutilization and the show’s overall direction. Throughout the sixth season, he appeared in several cameo roles, including that of himself and the Asgardian hero Thor. 

During the seventh and subsequent seasons, Shanks received nominations for a Leo Award for Best Lead Male Performance. This resulted from his performance in the episode “Lifeboat,” which aired during the seventh season. When the show’s final season premiered in March 2006, he signed up for only 16 of the 20 episodes. 

His reason was to take a break from the show to have his third child. The Ark of Truth and Continuum are both Stargate films that were released on DVD in 2008. He received the Leo Award for Best Lead Performance by a Male in a Feature-Length Drama for his work on the film.

He appeared as lobbyist Mark Bishop in a three-episode arc for season 6 of the Fox Network series 24 in 2007. The second season of the USA Network espionage thriller Burn Notice, where Shanks played Victor Stecker-Epps. Epps was a fellow burned agent and mad counterpart to Jeffrey Donovan’s character and it aired in 2008–2009. 

He featured in an episode of the SciFi Channel series Eureka where he played an alchemist who was partially responsible for the town’s near-destruction. Shanks also starred in the episode “All That Glitters.” 

Shanks starred as Jacob Thain in the SciFi Channel adventure thriller The Lost Treasure of the Grand Canyon. He did this with Shannen Doherty, who previously appeared on Beverly Hills, 90210, and Charmed. The film made its television debut on the cable network on December 20, 2008. 

An episode of Sanctuary, in which he co-starred with Amanda Tapping, another Stargate actor, aired in 2010. In the same year, he appeared in the disaster thriller Arctic Blast, where he played physicist Jack Tate.

Shanks has appeared in other movies since then, and in 2019, he appeared in the second season of Netflix’s science-fiction series Altered Carbon.
