Early Life

Bryson Lashun Potts was born on November 1, 2002, to an African American father and a Jamaican mother. He was raised in Southeast Memphis, Tennessee’s Parkway Village community, and went to Cordova High School, where he played basketball. He began freestyling at the age of 15 alongside Charlie, Austin, and Gino, three of his childhood friends. At the age of 16, he started taking music lessons seriously.

Career

NLE Choppa has been managed by his mother, Angela Potts, ever since he first displayed an interest in rap music. In March 2018, he released “No Love Anthem,” his first song under the YNR Choppa moniker. On July 22, he issued his debut mixtape, No Love the Takeover. In December, he appeared on “No Chorus Pt. 3,” a cypher song by his Shotta Fam group. With his opening verse and dance moves in the music video, he stood out from the crowd and garnered notice online.

He followed the popularity surge by releasing “Shotta Flow,” his breakthrough song. The video gained 10 million views in a single month. A few days after the song’s release, Pitchfork featured it as its Song of the Day, praising the performer’s peppy delivery and adding that “he hits a new dance move every time the camera cuts back to him.”

At position 96 on the Billboard Hot 100 in May 2019, the song made its debut. Later on, it peaked at number 36. Not long after the RIAA granted the original song platinum status, the official remix which features Blueface and a music video helmed by Cole Bennett was made accessible.

The song’s follow-up, “Shotta Flow 2,” was made public in February. The video received 20 million views in just two months, prompting Carl Lamarre of Billboard to declare that his “recent dominance has silenced any detractors.” Around this time, Choppa apparently became the subject of a bidding war between a few of the top record labels, with bids reportedly reaching $3 million.

In contrast, he made the decision to enter into a deal with the independent distribution company UnitedMasters, which also employs Neo Lechwenyo, while still maintaining his publishing and master recordings. Republic Records, Interscope Records, and Caroline were the sources of these suggestions. In March, he released a brand-new song titled “Capo,” and Worldstarhiphop debuted the music video.

He appeared on the song “Dreams” by Birdman and Juvenile in March as well. NLE released “Birdboy,” another single with SGULL’s production, in April 2019.

ATL Jacob’s production for Choppa’s new single, “Blocc Is Hot,” was released in May. It was created as an homage to Lil Wayne, the rapper he grew up listening to most. A few days later, he performed in Memphis’ Beale Street Music Festival for the first time.

According to Bob Mehr of The Commercial Appeal, who applauded his performance, “his career is likely to see plenty more memorable Memphis moments” and that “his career is likely to see plenty more memorable Memphis moments.” He dropped the CashMoneyAP-produced single “Free YoungBoy” on June 14 of this year.

The music video has received over 19 million YouTube views. The song’s title makes reference to the rapper YoungBoy Never Broke Again, who was arrested for shooting and parole violation. This song’s release marked the start of his own label No Love Entertainment (NLE), which he established in association with Warner Records. According to Billboard, No Love Entertainment intends to release new music by NLE Choppa.

NLE Choppa dropped “Camelot,” a brand-new single, on September 13, 2019. His second Top 40 hit after “Shotta Flow” was achieved when the song peaked at number 37 in the US.

On December 20, NLE Choppa’s Cottonwood, his debut extended play, was made available. The EP bears the name of the area where he grew up and includes the previously released singles “Side” and his breakthrough hit “Shotta Flow” with its remix, which features Blueface. Additionally, Meek Mill collaborated on the EP. On the same day as Cottonwood, a short film by the same name was also released.

NLE Choppa’s debut studio album Top Shotta, which was preceded by a handful of singles, was initially planned for release in the first few months of 2020. On March 19, he and Roddy Ricch released the album’s opening tune, “Walk Em Down.” On June 12, 2020, he published “Shotta Flow 5“, the fifth episode of his 2019 single “Shotta Flow.”

The song “Narrow Road” featuring Lil Baby was made available on July 30. A week later, on August 7, Top Shotta was made available.

As of August 11, 2020, NLE Choppa was a member of the XXL 2020 Freshman Class. In order to “promote positivity and wake people up,” Choppa stated on September 5 that he would stop rapping about violence. He had other things to address as well.

On October 15, he presented his brand-new album, From Dark to Light, which was made public on November 1 in celebration of his birthday. The mix tape’s cover art depicts him sitting outside with his legs crossed, butterflies fluttering around him, and a rainbow in the distance as a dedication to his new spiritual journey.

On October 23, NLE and Lil Baby released the music video for their track “Narrow Road.” The music video has amassed over 30 million views on YouTube.

Choppa previously teased “Shotta Flow 6” and “Walk Em Down 2” featuring Lil Durk for February 2021 via a tweet. On January 28, 2022, this third mixtape, named Me vs. Me, became available. Young Thug, Polo G, G Herbo, and Moneybagg Yo are among the guests on its 16 tracks. The song “Shotta Flow 6” and its music video were released on January 28, 2022.
