Rev Run was born Joseph Ward Simmons on the 14th day of November 1964, in Queens, Newyork. His father, Daniel, was a black history teacher and worked as a school attendance supervisor. His mother, Evelyn, served as a park administrator for New York City.

Joseph’s older brothers are both artists. Danny Simmons and Russell Simmons, who co-founded Def Jam records.

Career

Rev Run was the lead songster for a group named “The Force.” He and the late DJ Jason “Jam-master Jay” Mizell and Darryl Mc-Daniels later co-founded Run D.M.C. He adopted the name Rev Run when he became a Pentecostal minister.

Joseph Simmon and Valerie Vaughn married in 1983, and they had a son Joseph Jr “Jojo” and two daughters, Venessa and Angela, before their Divorce in 1992. In June of 1994, Rev Run married Justine Jones.

They welcomed their Sons Daniel “Diggy” and Russell “Russy.” They lost their daughter Victoria in 2006, just hours after she was born, to Omphalocele. A rare birth defect where organs grow outside the body through the navel.

Victoria’s Death was documented on Run House so fans of the show could see how the family handled the grief. Joseph and Justine adopted a baby girl in 2007 and named her Miley.

Joseph Simmons was given the protege of the year award in 2004 by his mentor Bernard Jordan. In 2007 he was named a B.M.I. icon by B.M.I. urban awards.

In 1987 with Run D.M.C, he won two soul train awards for “walk this way” and the best Rap album for “Raising hell.” In 2016, he earned a Grammy lifetime achievement award.
