Steven John Carell is an American actor and comedian who was born on August 16, 1962. Carell also worked as an occasional producer, writer, and director on The Office, NBC‘s translation of the British comedy series developed by Stephen Merchant and Ricky Gervais. Carell has won numerous awards for his work in film and television, including the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Television Series Musical or Comedy for The Office. By Life magazine, he was named “America’s Funniest Man.”

His Early Life

Steven John Carell was born in Concord, Massachusetts. Edwin Carell, his father, was an electrical engineer, and Harriet Theresa, his mother, was a mental nurse. Carell grew up in Acton, Massachusetts, as the youngest of four brothers. Carell would play the fife in the family’s performance. Later, he became a member of the 10th (North Lincoln) Regiment of Foot reenactment organization.

He went to Middlesex School for high school and played ice hockey and lacrosse. He went on to Denison University in Granville, Ohio, where he earned a history degree in 1984. Carell was a member of Burpee’s Seedy Theatrical Company, a student improvisational comedy club, and worked as a DJ at Denison’s campus radio station WDUB under the moniker “Sapphire Steve Carell.”

Carell was a member of a traveling children’s theatrical company early in his career. He also appeared in a 1989 commercial for the food chain Brown’s Chicken and in the comic musical “Knat Scatt Private Eye.”

Career

In 1991, Steve Carell joined the Chicago comedy troupe The Second City, and in the same year, he made his film debut in the comedy-drama “Curly Sue.” He was a cast member on ABC’s sketch comedy show “The Dana Carvey Show” in 1996. Even though the show only lasted seven episodes, it did give birth to the animated short “The Ambiguously Gay Duo,” in which Steve Carell played Gary. The segment was revived on “Saturday Night Live” later that year after “The Dana Carvey Show” ended. “The Dana Carvey Show” is widely acknowledged as the catalyst for Carell’s professional success.

Steve Carell also had major roles in numerous short-lived television series in the late 1990s and early 2000s, including “Over the Top” (1997), “Watching Ellie” (2002-2003), and “Come to Papa” (2004). From 1999 to 2005, he worked as a journalist for the late-night discussion and news satire show “The Daily Show,” where he appeared in various recurring segments such as “Even Stevphen” with Stephen Colbert and “Produce Pete.” During this time, he also had his first major film role, co-starring with Will Ferrell in the smash comedy “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy” (2004).

Steve Carell struck a deal with NBC in 2005 to feature in an American adaptation of the British comedy “The Office.” The show is a mockumentary that follows the daily operations of Dunder Mifflin, a mid-sized paper supply firm. Michael Scott, the company’s regional manager, was played by Carell. Despite low ratings in the first season, Carell’s performance in this part catapulted him into the spotlight. Despite the first season’s poor ratings, the program was revived for a second season because producers believed that Steve Carell’s impending film “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” (2005) would enhance the show’s (and Carell’s) popularity.

This was a wise decision. Steve Carell earned a Golden Globe and a Television Critics Association Award in 2006 for his work on “The Office.” He also received six Primetime Emmy Award nominations between 2006 and 2011.

Steve Carell worked on other projects in the meantime while filming “The Office.” “Evan Almighty” (2007), “Dan in Real Life” (2007), “Get Smart” (2008), and “Date Night” are just a few examples of such initiatives (2010). In 2010, he voiced the character of Gru in the animated family film “Despicable Me.” In the sequels “Despicable Me 2” (2013) and “Despicable Me 3,” he resumed his role as Gru (2017). Steve Carell eventually left “The Office” in 2011 to pursue a film career, however, he returned in 2013 for the series finale.

After leaving “The Office,” he worked on the true-crime thriller picture “Foxcatcher” (2014) starring Mark Ruffalo and Channing Tatum. He was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actor and an Academy Award for Best Actor for his depiction of billionaire and convicted killer John Eleuthère du Pont. His performance in the 2015 film “The Big Short” garnered him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture. “Freeheld,” a film starring Julianne Moore, Ellen Page, and Michael Shannon, was his other release in 2015.

Café Society” (2016), “Battle of the Sexes” (2017), “Beautiful Boy” (2018), “Vice” (2018), and “Welcome to Marwen” (2018) are among his other credits. In the fall of 2019, he will return to television in the Apple TV+ drama series “The Morning Show,” which will premiere in the fall of 2019. He also has his production firm, Carousel Productions.
