Mathew Tyler Oakley was born in Michigan on March 22, 1989, to a family of 14. However, his parents divorced while he was still a baby. In sixth grade, Oakley moved to Okemos and became involved in chorus and theatre. 

Oakley received a Bachelor of Arts in communication, marketing, and social media from Michigan State University. He went through a moment of sorrow while in college after a breakup of a long-term relationship. Oakley admits he considered suicide at the moment.
